Do you know what this device is? A Sky Quality Meter! Sky Quality Meters (SQMs) are handheld devices that measure how bright or dark the night sky is. They help communities, scientists, and land managers track light pollution and protect natural dark skies, an important part of Nevada’s outdoor heritage.

We have exciting news!

Friends of Nevada Wilderness has generously donated 10 Sky Quality Meters to the Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation, using the Save Starry Skies license plate funds! These devices will be part of a new Dark Skies Lending Library, allowing communities, educators, volunteers, and organizations across the state to borrow equipment and measure night sky quality in their communities.

This donation is helping NDOR and other dark skies advocates better understand the quality of night sky!

A huge thank‑you to Friends of Nevada Wilderness! Check out Friends of Nevada Wilderness 'Save Starry Skies' license plate, available at the local DMV. The Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation is leaving a positive impact in Nevada!

In 2025, our grant programs invested $1,163,437 into Nevada’s communities through the Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV) grant , the Nevada Outdoor Recreation and Education (NOER) grant, and the Nevada Outdoor Recreation and Infrastructure (NORI) grant.

That’s amazing!

The NOER grant round has $250,000 available for outdoor recreation and education programs in Nevada beginning August 2026. For more information about the NOER grant, visit www.ndor.nv.gov.

The OHV Grant Program will open in spring 2026. More information can be found at https://ohv.nv.gov.

NDOR is proud to support projects across the state that enhance outdoor recreation access for health, conservation, and economic development.

Nevada is on the rise! From 2023 to 2024, our state saw a 6.1% increase in outdoor recreation growth, according to the most recent Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) placing us among the top five fastest‑growing states in the nation. This momentum shows how outdoor recreation continues to strengthen communities across Nevada, from our rural towns to our urban centers.

State Offices of Outdoor Recreation are playing a critical role by supporting investments and initiatives that turn outdoor participation into local jobs and real opportunities for small businesses.

A new online training platform created to provide consistent training for community members and local professionals to become champions of Tahoe and Truckee is launching today. The self-paced “Destination Champion” program provides effective strategies for teaching visitors about the region’s unique culture and how to encourage people to help care for and protect what makes Tahoe and Truckee special.

The initiative, which aims to incentivize participants to complete the training by offering gift cards valid for services and experiences offered by local businesses, is being led by the Destination Stewardship Council in collaboration with partners at the North Tahoe Chamber, Tahoe Chamber and Truckee Chamber.

“Our region’s best advocates have always been those who live and work in our community,” said Nettie Pardue, managing director of the Lake Tahoe Destination Stewardship Council. “If we work together to teach visitors about the culture of our mountain towns, they’re more likely to embrace the pace of the Tahoe lifestyle when they’re here, feel more connected to our communities, and want to help take care of them.”

The self-paced online training program takes approximately one hour to complete and includes interactive modules designed to deepen knowledge of the Tahoe and Truckee regions and enhance visitor service skills. Participants can expect to learn tips for engaging with people — including handling challenges and difficult situations — familiarization with the three regions (North Lake Tahoe, South Lake Tahoe and Truckee) and the Washoe people, what sustainable tourism means for the region, and best practices in the outdoors.

The Destination Stewardship Council partnered with Learn Tourism to create the Destination Champion platform. A nonprofit academy that delivers effective and efficient education programs that engage, inspire, and empower stakeholders, Learn Tourism has worked with 60+ destinations to provide similar training platforms with strong results.
