Every other Friday, the brewers at 3 Nations Anna release a new beer brewed exclusively at our Anna location. Each beer is named after an important historic location, person, or event in the community we serve. This week’s small batch beer, available today, is a fruited IPA named “Vote FOR Scott-Barker Bond”.

3 Nations never gets involved in politics, but we are actively involved with the historical societies in the area and always support local history. During this upcoming May election, Melissa residents will have the opportunity to vote on the fate of the Scott-Barker House.

The Scott-Barker House, in Melissa, is only one of two Recorded Texas Historic Landmarks (RTHL) in this growing community. It is located on Highway 5 near downtown Melissa in Zadow Park. The home of these two original pioneer families is only one of two structures in Melissa with an RTHL designation. This home also has a pending application for a National Register of Historic Places designation.

The City of Melissa has put a bond election for $2.45 million to restore the historic house. The financial impact is less than $30 a year per resident and diminishes as the town grows every year.

The name of this beer is a shout-out to all Melissa residents to vote for restoring this historic home and making it an important part of Melissa’s future. Encourage Melissa residents to vote FOR Scott-Barker Bond in the May 4 election.

What Does A Vote FOR the Scott-Barker Bond mean?

A vote FOR the Scott-Barker Bond is a vote to protect one of Melissa's last few remaining historic assets.

A vote FOR the Scott-Barker Bond does not mean that we have to go with this particular proposal. This proposal is from only one entity. The City will have to put this project out for bid before any work begins.

A vote FOR the Scott-Barker Bond does not mean that we have to spend all of the money that is proposed. This is one opinion from one group.

If the bond fails to pass, a false equivalency may be drawn between not wanting to go with this proposal and not wanting to save the house.

Protecting our historic assets benefits the whole community. It's fun to think of all the potential future opportunities the Scott-Barker House could be used for to serve our community: small business pop ups, art shows, visitor center, local civic group meetings, parties, photo shoots, a museum. A structure like this can be repurposed for all kinds of uses. If we lose it, it's gone forever and the what ifs won't matter.

Opinion: Why the Scott-Barker House Is Important To Me

Last weekend I attended the unveiling of a historical marker at the oldest house in Carrollton, Texas. Located near the Downtown Carrollton Square at I35 and Belt Line Road, the oldest home in the area received its state recognition for being a historic and important landmark. Today, it serves as a retail operation and the entire community can enjoy walking around the old home as they shop. A large crowd attended the ceremony which included the Carrollton Mayor, city council members, city officials, the family that owns the house and local business and community leaders. Mayor Steve Babick communicated the importance of the state’s historic recognition and the role the home had played in Carrollton’s early growth.

The Scott-Barker house already has its official designation because some interested Melissa residents cared enough to recognize the home’s importance to the early residents of Melissa. Over the past year, the town has lost some of its oldest buildings in the historic downtown area as progress encroaches on the historic area of Melissa. With just two Recorded Texas Historic Landmark designated buildings in Melissa, it is time for the community to stand up and protect this historic building.

The Scott-Barker house was the home of important Melissa pioneers. For 150 years, it has stood right where it is today in what is now Zadow Park on Highway 5, just west of downtown Melissa. It survived a violent F4 tornado that destroyed Melissa in 1921, losing only a chimney to the storm. Eight years later, it survived the great Melissa fire that destroyed a rebuilt downtown. It is my hope that it survives the Bond that has now been put before the people of Melissa during the current election.

This is not a political post. There is no democrat or republican vote on this bond. The residents of Melissa are just voting to tell city officials that this important building is worth the money to renew it. The city now owns the building and has designated it as “city office space”, but my belief is that this building is better served as a museum, a meeting place for local civic organizations or other non-profits and community groups.

Elementary school children should be allowed to visit this historic building to learn and appreciate the history of the hard-working pioneers that built what is now a thriving, fast-growing community.

With just two designated historic RTHL buildings left in Melissa, vote For the Scott-Barker Bond so that Melissa’s history can be preserved for future generations.

Thursday, April 4 is the last day to sign up to vote. If you haven’t done so, please register to vote before the deadline and carefully consider voting FOR the Scott-Barker Bond on your ballot.

Melissa History Matters!

Melissa has had an alarming amount of its historic fabric removed. Let's let this very important piece of Melissa history remain intact for our community and future generations to enjoy! Vote FOR the Scott Barker House on May 4 (early voting April 22 - April 30)

The Scott-Barker House was the home of LA Scott. Scott was a significant contributor to the development of Melissa, McKinney and Collin County. LA Scott is the namesake of Melissa's Scott-Barker House, the LA Scott Home in McKinney and the former LA Scott Jr High School in McKinney.

The Scott-Barker House maintains a Texas Historical Marker, Recorded Texas Historic Landmark designation and a pending National Register of Historic Places designation.

LA Scott was the first known occupant of the Scott-Barker House in City of Melissa’s Zadow Park. Due in part to Scott's historical significance, the Scott-Barker House was granted the highest designation the state can award a historic structure, Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) in 1999.

Can a Historical House Really Bring Value to Our City?

-The Scott-Barker House is a Cultural Asset with prestigious historic designations that City of Melissa already owns: DFW cities are spending substantial funds to bring in historic homes and buildings (Anna, Frisco, Flower Mound, Garland, Allen, to name a few.)

Funding available to maintain the house:
In the future, the City can use Hotel Occupancy Tax money for heritage tourism, opening the house (or part of it) to the public as a museum or visitor center.

Structures with historic designations add value to the city:
Scott-Barker maintains a Texas Historical Marker, Recorded Texas Historical Landmark designation, and a pending *National Register of Historic Places designation. (Scott-Barker would be stripped of all designations if removed from its historic location.)

The Scott-Barker House: A Cultural Asset that would Serve Our Community

The Scott-Barker House is one of the oldest surviving historic structures in the City of Melissa. The house is a unique example of an L-Plan Folk Victorian Home from the Railroad Boom, situated in what is now a city park. Celebrated for its unique physical features, historically significant former owner/occupants, and its resilience to have withstood the test of time through natural disaster and hyper expansion, the Scott-Barker House is the beloved Landmark of Downtown Melissa.

Historic Structures with Official Historic Designations are a benefit and an asset to the community. The Scott-Barker House maintains a Texas Historical Marker and a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL) designation. If the bond passes, Scott-Barker would also have the opportunity to secure a pending designation for the National Register of Historic Places.

Note that Scott-Barker House would be stripped of all current designations and will not be eligible for historic designations going forward if the house is removed from its historic location.

The Scott-Barker House is a unique cultural asset for the community, one that we are in desperate need of. The community loves this house for its inviting warmth, unique charm, its reassuring sense of permanency and heritage... but we also NEED this house. Melissa community organizations have used the house for meetings and events for years in the past. This is an ideal use for the house and many community organizations are in need of a space like this. Once the house is restored, many of us hope that community organization use can resume at Scott-Barker. We don't have another space like this. And this kind of venue can't be recreated.

The Scott-Barker House is Melissa’s very own Recorded Texas Historic Landmark (RTHL). RTHL is the highest designation the State of Texas can award a historic structure. Scott-Barker is one of only 2 structures in Melissa with an RTHL designation. Scott-Barker also has a pending application for a National Register of Historic Places designation.

The home’s warm and inviting style, old growth trees, central location, and rich history create a unique and desirable location for events, meetings, field trips, civic groups, pop ups, or a museum. Melissa needs this. We have nothing else like it. And we own it... it's ours. Bought and paid for with our tax dollars, it is owned by the City of Melissa and sits proudly as the cornerstone of Zadow Park in the heart of Melissa.

This April and May, Melissa residents will have the opportunity to vote on the fate of the Scott-Barker House in a bond election. The City of Melissa has proposed a bond election of $2.45 million to restore the house. The proposed median impact to individual homeowners is $30 per year. However, with the city's rapid growth, the tax burden continues to diminish as the population grows. The City has stated that leftover excess funds would go to facilities maintenance.
