Last week the new board attended the Iowa Association of School Boards and I gained more knowledge and confidence about this important position. IASB reaffirmed that the board’s purpose is to “steer the ship” and not to micromanage or go in with a personal agenda. Also the whole vibe there was about projecting positivity. I believe we have a great team that will do what’s right for ALL students while also supporting the teachers and staff. (This will also be my last post on this page) 🧡🖤🧡🖤

I attended the school board meeting tonight. I’m glad I went because it was very informative. There were teachers from each building presenting the pros and cons of the new curriculum. The reading, writing and math sounds very successful in elementary. Middle and high school sounds like it’s going in the right direction focusing on not only improving test scores but getting the kids to problem solve and learning real life skills. There are kinks that need fixing but listening to how these teachers collaborate with each other is very impressive. Now I just hope next time I’m sitting on the board and not in a spectator.

Tomorrow is the big day! I didn’t know running for my local school board would be like this. I have this page and yard signs (even though some got stolen 🤷‍♀️) thanks to the small donations from LOCAL community members. No large signs, radio ads and tshirts. No thanks I’d rather not have worry about “paying that back”. This is Carroll not DC.

I wanted people to see the real me. That’s why I’ve been sharing my personal stories and concerns. This was my life as a mother of two incredibly special kids. Each having their unique educational needs and experiences. I’ve also been moved by hearing your stories. Most of us have a common goal in wanting the best for our children and community. I’d love to see a support group for parents of special ed students, a Kuemper parent committee, a welcoming committee for new families, mentorship program by outstanding members of the community, student to student mentors, and so on. We need more involvement. Unfortunately it’s what is happening outside the classroom that causes the problems inside the classroom. So much talk of parents rights. How about we focus on parents responsibility. We need to be better adults and role models. Because we need our teachers to teach and not be parents. I don’t know how to fix this so in the meantime we give the schools the tools to fill in the gaps. School needs to continue to be a safe space for everyone: students , teachers and staff.

I’ve been the quiet mom. Raising my kids to the best of my abilities. Stepping up when Rec center didn’t have enough coaches, being a chaperone for field trips, cheering from the stands, being a behind the scenes helper. So this is new territory for me. I have no person, political party or organization guiding me through this process. So know I will listen to the educators and community. I’m not following the playbook of an outside organization and neither are Jill, Casie or Jim. We are trustworthy and know how to put common good over personal gain. Please vote tomorrow 🧡🖤

In honor of the musical The Little Mermaid we are going to this afternoon, I wanted to show the importance of inclusion and diversity. Some people would think a kid with poor communication and social skills would not succeed in speech and drama. But plays, musicals and large group speech contests had a profound impact on Ben. The confidence he gained and the social skills he learned while engaging with his peers are things he never would’ve got in the classroom. So yes academics are important but the life lessons they learn from extracurriculars are vital and only enhance academics. The opportunity Ben’s peers learned from being around him should be taken into consideration too. Studies have shown the importance of inclusion and I have first hand knowledge that it works.
Some people are running on platforms that want to take away inclusion and diversity. Now Ben having autism didn’t guarantee his role. He had to audition just like everyone else. I fear some people would have preferred he couldn’t audition and maybe segregate him and others into special Ed class away from his peers for “safety” reasons. Again some want us to go backwards and that can’t happen.

Enjoying this beautiful weather by catching up on reading this challenged book by the “controversial” Judy Blume for the book club my daughter and I are in. Rebel Readers is a group of mothers and tween daughters that read age appropriate challenged and banned books. We meet once a month and discuss the book together. We have read topics on racism, LGBTQ, bullying, witchcraft, etc. My favorite was the Anne Frank graphic novel. I’m always impressed by the kids’ views and opinions of the books. The best part is the bonding I get with my daughter. We get to have discussions that we may never would’ve had. Some of the discussions are deep but mostly there’s a lot of laughter during our club meetings. Any way parents can spend quality time with their children is always worth it for both the kids and also the parents. I think we can all agree on that.

This is a little sample of what it’s like as a mom of a special needs student: The yearly IEP meetings! At first it seemed overwhelming but over time and with help and guidance from everyone at CCSD we were able to guide Ben and help him reach his goals. We worked hard at home too. It wasn’t easy. The picture schedule was something he used at home and school. He had academic and behavioral goals on his IEP.

Each student is different but every parent wants their child to succeed and be valued. I’d like to see improvement in the special education system and improved communication. We give the teachers and TAs the right tools then not only are we helping our special students but the rest of the class will benefit too.

When I decided to run, I didn’t know who else was going to be throwing their hat in. When the list came out, I didn’t personally know anyone. The forum was my first interaction with my fellow candidates. Three were friendly and warm and the other three not so much. I decided I wanted to get to know Jill, Jim and Casie better especially since there was a good chance I would be on the board with one or two of them. I appreciated their perspective and opinions since we all are very different. Their commitment and willingness to share ideas and listen will be greatly needed on a school board. Please vote for Jim, Jill, Casie or Stacy if you want a school board that wants to keep improving and moving forward and put the community, schools and the students best interests first!

Thank you to everyone who came out last night to the meet and greet. Was nice to talk individually, listening to your concerns about the future of our district. We have less than a week so please vote early or on the 7th. Our kids’ future and wellbeing depends on it! 🧡🖤🧡🖤
