Carrboro This Week:
👏As the school year comes to a close and summer begins, the Town of Carrboro extends congratulations to the graduates of Carrboro RISE, a civic education and leadership program for students at Carrboro High School. The program provides students with a firsthand look at local government, community leadership, and public service through direct engagement with town officials and staff. In recognition of their accomplishments, the students were honored by Mayor Barbara Foushee and the Town Council last month. We applaud these emerging leaders and wish them—and all students—a safe, enjoyable, and well-deserved summer vacation.

A resurfacing project on Greensboro Street from Braxton Foushee Street to Oak Avenue will be underway beginning Sunday, June 14 with lane closures and operations occurring nightly from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday.

The project will include milling and paving work, as well as a new pavement marking plan that will reduce the width of vehicle travel lanes and add a new buffer for bicycle lanes.

The contractor for the NC Department of Transportation project is Fred Smith Company.

Please be alert when traveling through the area as lane closures will be implemented nightly; there will be a pilot vehicle for maneuvering traffic through the work area. The project will be underway for three to four weeks, depending on weather conditions.

Beginning June 15, visitors to Westwood Cemetery will notice construction activities as the Town implements improvements identified in the Westwood Cemetery Master Plan.

The current project includes:
✅ Reconfiguring the cemetery access road to improve visitor safety
✅Installing a new asphalt walking path
✅Constructing a rain garden and drainage swale to better manage stormwater and reduce erosion

Westwood Cemetery will remain open throughout construction. Visitors are asked to be mindful of work zones and exercise caution when visiting the cemetery. Thank you for your patience as we complete these improvements.

About Westwood Cemetery
Established around 1933, Westwood Cemetery is an 8.73-acre municipal burial ground located at 401 Davie Road. Westwood is one of two town-owned cemeteries (alongside Old Carrboro Cemetery) managed by the Public Works Department. In 2023, the Carrboro Town Council adopted the Westwood Cemetery Master Plan. This expansion outlines additions of walking paths, rain gardens, a memorial wall, and a loop road.
