On Sept. 11, the Carolina community including members of Carrboro Fire-Rescue and Carrboro Police gathered at UNC-Chapel Hill Kenan Stadium to honor the 2,977 lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, and the bravery of first responders, service members and civilians who demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness that day.

Beginning at 6 a.m., participants gathered to climb 2,071 stairs, representing the height of the World Trade Center towers.

Twenty-five years later, we remember.

Hear from Andrea Ruiz about her experience connecting with the Carrboro community this summer!

Thank you to Andrea for interning with the Town of Carrboro’s Communication and Engagement Department as part of the 2026 Chapel Hill Summer Youth Employment Program. We loved having Andrea on the team and seeing her learn, contribute and help advance our community engagement work.

Through the Summer Youth Employment Program, young people gain hands-on work experience while building skills for their future. Participants work up to 20 hours a week for six to eight weeks and take part in career preparation workshops focused on interviewing, resume writing, workplace expectations and more.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to support the next generation of community leaders—and proud to have had Andrea with us!
