What role can law enforcement play in creating safer streets?

Join Sergeant Derrick McNeil of the Carolina Beach Police Department at the 2026 NC BikeWalk Transportation Summit as he shares how data, enforcement, roadway observations, and community partnerships can help address safety concerns.

When DOT resources or project approval are not available, law enforcement often remains the first line of defense in addressing roadway safety concerns. This session focuses on real-world approaches to improving traffic safety through officer-driven input on road design, lighting placement, and targeted enforcement. Emphasis is placed on identifying high-risk areas, working with local partners, and implementing cost-effective solutions that enhance visibility, compliance, and overall safety.

Sergeant Derrick McNeil has served with the Carolina Beach Police Department for over twelve years, where he supervises patrol operations and supports departmental training and field performance. He has extensive experience in traffic enforcement, criminal investigations, and field training.

Learn practical strategies that communities can use to improve safety for all road users. Register for the summit today! https://bikewalknc.wildapricot.org/event-6464500

King Tides are expected to begin this weekend on Friday, June 12th, lasting through Wednesday, June 17th. A super new moon will occur during this time, increasing the possibility of flooding on roads and other low lying areas. Locations most often affected include Canal Drive, Florida Avenue, Carolina Beach Avenue North, and other low-lying areas.

Town officials may close roads due to flooding. Please use caution and obey traffic signs and barriers. Avoid walking or driving in flooded areas; salt water can be detrimental to your vehicle and could contain debris. Carolina Beach Police Officers will issue citations to anyone driving around barricades and through flooded areas.
