As the school year comes to an end and summer begins, the Scott Township Police Department wants to remind parents and young riders that safety remains our top priority. We are seeing an increase in the use of electric scooters, e-bikes, and other motorized devices throughout our community. While these can be a fun and convenient way to travel, it is important that riders and parents understand the laws governing their use and the safety risks they can present.

Our goal is to educate our community, prevent injuries, and ensure that all residents can enjoy a safe summer. We encourage parents to review the information in the attached flyer with their children and discuss responsible riding habits, traffic safety, and the importance of following Pennsylvania law.
By working together, we can help keep our roadways, sidewalks, parks, and neighborhoods safe for everyone.

The Scott Township Police Department is pleased to welcome Sydney Patrus, MSW, LSW, as our new Police Social Worker.

Ms. Patrus was officially hired during the regular meeting of the Scott Township Board of Commissioners on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, and will begin her role on May 11, 2026. She will undergo a comprehensive training program designed to prepare her for the unique responsibilities of police social work and to help her become familiar with both the Department and the community we serve.

A recent graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work, Ms. Patrus brings valuable experience from her internship with the Baldwin Borough Police Department, where she gained firsthand exposure to the role of a police social worker. Additionally, she brings a wealth of experience from her tenure as a social worker in the Emergency Department of the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

The selection process for this position was highly competitive, and Ms. Patrus distinguished herself among a strong group of candidates through her professionalism, skill set, and commitment to service. We are confident she will be an outstanding addition to our team and a valuable resource for our community.

Incident Involving Prohibited Items on Chartiers Valley Intermediate School Bus

March 20, 2026

The Scott Township Police Department is issuing the following statement regarding an incident that occurred this morning on a school bus transporting students to Chartiers Valley Intermediate School.

A student was found to be in possession of an electronic stun device and pepper spray while riding the school bus. During the bus ride, the pepper spray was discharged onto the floor of the bus, affecting several students onboard. School staff and transportation personnel immediately notified authorities, and the situation was promptly addressed upon arrival at the school.

The School Resource Officer, in coordination with Chartiers Valley School District officials, are conducting an active investigation into the matter. Appropriate measures are being taken in accordance with school policy and applicable law. There is no ongoing threat to students.

Because the individuals involved are juveniles, no further information will be released.

At approximately 12:00 a.m. on February 22, Scott Township Police assisted Heidelberg Police with a reported armed individual in the 1700 block of Washington Street who was threatening to harm himself and others.

Upon arrival, officers encountered an adult male armed with a knife. Officers gave repeated commands for him to drop the weapon. After the male charged at officers, and a Taser deployment was ineffective, a Scott Township officer discharged their firearm striking the subject.

The male was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. No officers were injured.

The Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit is investigating. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-833-ALL-TIPS. Information is preliminary and subject to change.

County Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Heidelberg.

At 12:00 am on February 22, County 9-1-1 received a call from an individual claiming to be armed and threatening to harm themself and others in the 1700 block of Washington Street. When officers arrived on scene, they encountered an adult male outside a residence with a knife. Preliminary information indicates responding officers ordered the male to drop the knife when he charged towards the officers. An officer from the Heidelberg Police Department deployed a taser, but the male continued towards officers with the knife. An officer with the Scott Township Police Department then shot the male multiple times. He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The Allegheny County Police Department’s Homicide Unit was requested, and detectives have initiated an investigation.

Anyone with information concerning this incident is asked to call the County Police Tip Line 1-833-ALL-TIPS. Callers can remain anonymous.

🚨 Winter Weather Advisory – This Weekend ❄️🚔

The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy snow this coming weekend, which is expected to create hazardous road conditions across our area.

For your safety—and the safety of first responders—we strongly urge residents to stay home unless travel is absolutely necessary. Poor visibility, snow-covered roads, and stranded vehicles significantly increase the risk of crashes and injuries.

Please remember: responding to stuck or disabled motorists who chose to travel unnecessarily pulls police, fire, and EMS resources away from true emergencies that could not be avoided. These resources may be urgently needed for medical calls, fires, or other critical incidents.

Additionally, residents should expect that response times may be longer than normal due to dangerous road conditions and increased call volume during the storm. Crews will continue to respond as safely and quickly as possible, but conditions may limit how fast emergency vehicles can travel.

Plan ahead, avoid non-essential travel, and check on vulnerable neighbors if it is safe to do so. We appreciate your cooperation in helping keep our community safe during this storm.
