It all starts with a warm welcome. ☀️

Newcomer and refugee families new to the country and San Juan Unified School District may have many questions before the first day of school: How does the school system work? How do I communicate with my student’s teacher?

The Newcomer Support Team supports them through the Parent Orientation, one of the many ways the team helps families become familiar with the district and their child’s school.

At the heart of this work is a simple goal: helping every family feel welcomed, informed and confident as they begin their journey in San Juan Unified.

Starting the day with a good book! 📚💚

Before the school day begins, students at Green Oaks Elementary make their way to Reading Club, a special place to read, explore new books and enjoy some quiet time.

The club was created years ago by parent volunteers and is now run by Green Oaks staff. Today, students can spend time reading and exploring books in a welcoming environment while developing a love of reading.

San Juan Unified is proud to provide opportunities like these that help our youngest students discover the joy of reading while building a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

Antes de que comience la escuela, los alumnos de la Green Oaks Elementary se dirigen al Club de Lectura, un lugar especial para leer, descubrir nuevos libros y disfrutar de un rato de tranquilidad.

Students at Encina High School recently got their first look inside the school's new science building.

Before diving into the day's lesson, Ms. Arrington's biology students took time to get familiar with their new learning environment, exploring the classrooms and lab spaces that will support hands-on science for years to come.

Building community through district committees! 💚

The first District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) meeting of the 2026-27 school year took place on Sept. 3, welcoming parents and guardians of English learner (EL) students across San Juan Unified.

These meetings allow members to learn about programs and services through presentations from district departments or community partners, connect with other parents/guardians and share ideas to help improve support for EL students.

Overall, these meetings support San Juan Unified’s commitment to creating meaningful educational partnerships between families, staff and community members.

Creando comunidad mediante los comités de distrito. 💚

El 3 de septiembre se llevó a cabo la primera reunión del Comité Asesor de Padres de Aprendices de Inglés del Distrito (DELAC) del año escolar 2026-27, en la que se dio la bienvenida a padres y tutores de estudiantes que aprenden inglés (EL) de todo el Distrito Escolar Unificado de San Juan.

The countdown to graduation starts with the sunrise. ☀️🎓

Each fall, high school seniors across San Juan Unified School District gather before the school day begins for Senior Sunrise, a tradition that brings classmates together to celebrate the start of their final year of high school.

From decorating jeans and dusting off their elementary school backpacks to watching the sunrise with friends, these moments help students reflect on how far they've come while looking ahead to the memories still to be made.

Watch students at Encina High School and El Camino Fundamental High School kick off their senior year and celebrate the tradition that marks the beginning of their final chapter.

From her first teaching job working with refugees in Indonesia to three decades serving as a teacher and leader with San Juan Adult Education, Michell has built a career centered on helping others.

As Michell prepares for retirement, she reflects on the students she has served, the experiences that shaped her career and the impact of 30 years in adult education.

Kindergarten students gathered in the library for a reading of “This Book Just Ate My Dog!” — a playful story about a little girl whose dog mysteriously disappears into the middle of the book’s pages! 🐶

Beyond the fun of seeing what happens next, time in the library gives students opportunities to build their literacy skills, discover new stories and ideas, and grow their curiosity and imagination.

Experiences like these are part of how San Juan Unified provides students with rich learning opportunities that encourage them to read, learn, explore and build a lifelong love of learning. ❤️📖

Kicking off a new era at San Juan High School! 🏈✨

Friday night lights took on a new meaning at San Juan as students, families, staff and community members gathered for the first football game in the school’s newly modernized stadium.

The modernized stadium features a new synthetic all-weather track and field, an updated scoreboard, two new tennis courts, upgraded restrooms, a new ticket booth and concession area, enhanced security features, ADA-compliant walkways and more.

San Juan Unified is proud to invest in modern, welcoming spaces that support student success while creating new opportunities for connection, celebration and community.
