We've received complaints of an increased disregard for stop signs and speed on Carpenter around 2nd.

Stopping and driving safely gives Carmel by the Sea the walk-ability she deserves.

We are out again today to ensure stops are appropriate and to remind all to slow down when in town.

Drive safely Carmel by the Sea! You and this community are worth it!

Saturday, May 30th, Carmel-by-the-Sea took an important step forward in emergency preparedness with our inaugural evacuation drill. On behalf of the Carmel-by-the-Sea Police Department, I want to sincerely thank our community members who participated, provided thoughtful feedback, and trusted us throughout the process. Your input regarding the alert system, communication, traffic flow, and overall experience will help us continue to improve and strengthen our preparedness efforts for the future.

I also want to extend my deepest gratitude to all of our local and regional partners who courageously stepped into their roles during this drill. From public safety agencies and city staff to transportation, emergency management, CERT, VIPS, and countless supporting organizations — the collaboration and professionalism displayed today was extraordinary. More importantly, we have built partnerships and relationships that will serve this community for decades to come.

A special thank you goes to City Administrator Brandon Swanson and Assistant City Administrator Marisa Bermudez for their unwavering support, leadership, and belief in this effort from the very beginning. I also want to recognize our incredible Public Works team under the leadership of Shari and Rob for the countless behind-the-scenes details they handled to help make this drill a success. Jesse Garibay… we don’t know how you juggled making all of those signs, but THANK YOU as well… I will keep a few in my office during my time here!

And a truly ginormous thank you to Leslie Fenton, whose coordination of the Safety Fair and attention to every intricate detail provided the perfect finishing touch to this entire event. None of this would have been possible without the incredible team at the Carmel-by-the-Sea Police Department. Sgt. Bruno and Sgt. Clifford organized the behind the scenes plans to ensure the drill was effective.

To our dispatchers, our dedicated Animal Control and Parking Officer Cindi Mitchell, and the men and women of our department who committed countless hours over the past several months — thank you for stepping up and making this vision a reality. Our IT team, Joel and Daniel, you persevered through some real IT challenges and I know we are better today after your hard work!

And finally, to the more than 50 volunteers from our VIPS (under Deanna and Diana) and CERT (under Wanda and Scot) teams: your drive, determination, professionalism, and effectiveness during this drill were inspiring. Carmel-by-the-Sea is stronger and safer because of your service. Prepared Together. Stronger Together.

Almost time for the Evacuation Drill! Remember it's 1) Voluntary and 2) A Drill.

Let's do this, Carmel!

When Carmel Police Chief Todd Trayer suggested to local law enforcement and emergency response colleagues that the tiny town of 3,100 residents mount a major disaster evacuation drill, some looked

Our Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is growing! Welcome Scott Julian!

Scott is the founder of Julian Consultants, LLC and a Carmel-by-the-Sea resident with more than 25 years of experience in construction, real estate development, project leadership, and community service. Throughout his career, he has led complex residential projects, served in executive leadership roles, and developed a passion for helping homeowners protect and preserve the safety, functionality, and value of their homes. Scott graduated from Leadership Carmel (Class of 2021) and is actively involved in local community initiatives.

Scott’s current work focuses on home preservation, aging-in-place solutions, wildfire resilience, and emergency preparedness. He believes strong communities are built through stewardship, preparedness, and service to others. As a member of Carmel CERT, he looks forward to contributing his experience and local knowledge to support public safety and community resilience.

What I see is a person who loves Carmel by the Sea, is investing to ensure the community continues to thrive, and jumped on an opportunity to join our Peninsula in their collaborative response to any emergency.

Welcome to the team Scott and we look forward to your work this week at the Evacuation Drill... and for years to come!

Remembering our fallen at Devendorf Park today. Thank you for the many who could make it out. Former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta gave a tremendous speech about our Country and we are so grateful to have him as part of our village. He reminded us that every life lost is a life that mattered to our freedoms today.

Also heard from Mayor Byrne, the Veterans Transition Center team, and we sang a few songs to remember those who gave their lives for our country. The American Legion 512's Jerry hosted the event and we are grateful for the beautiful ceremony.
