Reed Memorial Library of Carmel, NY

Reed Memorial Library of Carmel, NY The Reed Library is located in Carmel, at the intersection of Routes 6 and 52. In 1913 that dream was to become a reality.

The Reed Memorial Library is located at the intersection of Routes 6 and 52 in the Hamlet of Carmel, across from Lake Gleneida. Convenient free parking is available in the Gilead Presbyterian Church parking lot as well as on Seminary Hill Road. In 1881 a group of friends and neighbors formed the Literary Union of Carmel, the first organization in Putnam County to establish a public library. The Li

brary’s books were stored in private residences and offices throughout the Hamlet and the Literary Union met regularly in members’ homes. Meetings centered on literary and cultural themes and almost always concluded with entertainment – singing, stories, skits, music and refreshments. For thirty years Literary Union members met in various places throughout the Hamlet, packed up books and moved them from one available office space to the next, dreaming about the day the Library would have a permanent home. The Reed Memorial Library was built in memory of William Belden Reed by his wife, Arietta Crane Reed, on land donated by the Ryder family, all early Literary Union supporters. The New York City architectural firm of Pryor and Gaylor designed the building. In planning the design it was emphasized that the structure had to house a library as well as provide a meeting place for the community. By creating an irregularly shaped structure with its center room being visible from the stacks and both reading rooms, the architects succeeded in providing the Hamlet not only with a striking although conservatively designed Tudor Revival building but also with an exceptionally functional library that maintains its functionality to the present day. The Library was constructed by the Miller-Reed Construction Company of New York City. The masonry work was subcontracted to Genero Ventresca of the neighboring town of Southeast; the stone itself came from the Lake Gilead area about three miles away. The interior has extensive wood paneling, a Gothic Revival fireplace in the children’s reading room and classical columns that separate the oval lobby from the main stacks. The building retains its original decorative features and all of the major interior spaces retain their original early twentieth century institutional furnishings which show the pronounced influence of the then popular Arts and Crafts Movement. The Reed Memorial Library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 for its architectural significance. In 2013 voters approved the establishment of the Reed Memorial Library District. Reed’s century-long commitment to providing ever-expanding services in an inviting, friendly community center will continue thanks to the support of its community. Beautifully constructed and maintained, the Reed Memorial Library continues the work of the early Literary Union by bringing cultural, educational and recreational opportunities to the Carmel community. The Library offers for loan a large selection of the latest books, CDs, DVDs, magazines, audio books , e-books, and passes to popular museums as well as streaming and downloadable video, music and audio books. Public computers and wireless Internet access are available. The Library hosts a continuous schedule of programs and special events emphasizing literacy enhancement and community learning.

Whew! We are still recovering from that amazing reenactment at the Heroes Battle the Redcoats event at Veterans Memorial Park this past Saturday! 🇺🇸🐎📕

It was an absolute honor to represent the Putnam County Libraries Association. We had the best time seeing so many of you out there! You all kept us so busy that we completely ran out of library swag! 🤯🎉

The highlights? Oh, just hanging out with the community and... NO BIG DEAL, BUT WE SAW GEORGE WASHINGTON! 🦅🎩

A massive shoutout to and for doing such an amazing job creating a wonderful, immersive experience for everyone who attended. What a weekend!

Huzzah! 🙌✨

📸 We recently welcomed a few of our Little Reeders to visit the future home of our Discovery Garden alongside Ms. Robin, Denise, and Sandy from Six Diamonds!

Now, are these award-winning professional photographs? No.

Have we fully mastered the lighting situation back there? Also no.

Thankfully, nobody was judging our photography skills. 😆

While the garden is still a work in progress, we couldn't wait to share the space with some of our youngest patrons. It's easy to imagine all the reading, exploring, learning, and memory-making that will happen here once everything comes together.

For now, we'll celebrate the smiles, the excitement, and the fact that we successfully got everyone looking in roughly the same direction at the same time—which honestly feels like a bigger accomplishment than figuring out the lighting. 😆❤️

A huge thank you to Sandy from Six Diamonds for joining us, and to our Little Reeders for helping us imagine all the possibilities for this exciting new space.

We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to the Carmel Rotary Club for their generous donation, which is helping make the Discovery Garden possible. Community partnerships like these help transform ideas into spaces that will benefit local families for years to come.

We can't wait to watch the Discovery Garden grow right alongside the children who will enjoy it for years to come. 🌱📚✨

Ever wonder how the library stays upright, online, and completely on track (notice in the picture she stayed on the ground)? Meet Janice, our Assistant Director and the ultimate MVP of the Reed Library Team! 🧙‍♀️✨

If you’ve ever used a computer here, seen a perfectly organized schedule, or witnessed a minor library emergency magically resolve itself, you have Janice to thank. She wears about a hundred different hats around here, and honestly? She looks great in all of them.

Here is just a fraction of what Janice does for us every single day:

💻 Technology Guru: If it plugs in, boots up, or glitches out, Janice is on it. She keeps our digital world spinning.

🌐 Digital Navigator: Teaching, guiding, and helping the public master the digital landscape with endless patience.

📋 Schedule Master & Personnel Officer: Solving the ultimate daily puzzle of who, what, where, and when so our doors stay open.

📱 Always On Call: Seriously, her dedication knows no bounds.

Janice is the glue, the tech support, the organizer, and the heart of so much of what we do. We would quite literally be lost in the stacks without her!
