25 years later, we remember.

We remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001. We remember the first responders who ran toward danger, those who gave their lives trying to save others, and the countless acts of courage and selflessness witnessed on one of our nation's darkest days.

We remember that some of them were our neighbors. Their names are engraved at the Putnam Heroes Memorial in Carmel, alongside the Putnam first responders who have died in the years since from illnesses connected to the rescue and recovery at Ground Zero.

Today, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office joins our community and our nation in honoring all those we lost, their families, the survivors, and the first responders whose courage will never be forgotten.

25 years later, our promise remains the same: Never Forget.

Our dedicated UTV Bike Path Patrol deputy quickly located the individual and safely took him into custody. Great work by all the officers who assisted with the response to this incident!

Weekend Highlights September 4-7, 2026

PATTERSON
Deputies responded to a local business for a reported burglary. Several items and a vehicle were reported stolen. The incident remains under investigation.

PUTNAM VALLEY
Deputies arrested two individuals for drug-related offenses.

PATTERSON
During a traffic stop on Route 22, deputies discovered a quantity of suspected fentanyl. The driver was taken into custody and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance.

COLD SPRING
Deputies assisted the Cold Spring Police Department with a disorderly and intoxicated individual. The individual became combative and resisted officers before being taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses.

SOUTHEAST
Deputies made two separate DWI arrests during traffic stops in the early morning hours. Both drivers were taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses.

SOUTHEAST
Deputies responded to a reported cardiac arrest and immediately began life-saving measures, including CPR and the use of an AED. Deputies continued CPR until EMS arrived, and a pulse was successfully restored before the individual was transported to the hospital.

Daily Highlights Thursday September 3, 2026

PUTNAM VALLEY
Deputies responded to a reported verbal domestic dispute. The situation was resolved on scene.

SOUTHEAST
Deputies responded to a dispute involving a delivery driver who was reportedly acting aggressively following a grocery delivery. No crime was committed, and the driver was advised not to return to the residence.

KENT
Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the Taconic State Parkway. The driver was non-compliant with deputies and was subsequently taken into custody and charged with multiple offenses.

PHILIPSTOWN
During a traffic stop on Route 9, a driver refused to exit the vehicle and became non-compliant with deputies. The driver was eventually taken into custody without further incident and charged with multiple offenses.

Deputies responded to a reported domestic dispute. The parties were separated and the incident was resolved without further action.

SOUTHEAST
Deputies responded to a reported domestic dispute. No crime was reported and the incident was documented.

PUTNAM VALLEY
Deputies responded to a reported verbal domestic dispute. No injuries or crimes were reported and the incident was resolved without further action.

PATTERSON
Deputies assisted EMS with an individual experiencing a mental health crisis. The individual was transported for evaluation without further incident.

Weekend Highlights August 28-30, 2026

SATURDAY, AUGUST 29

SOUTHEAST – A driver was arrested for DWI and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation after deputies located a vehicle parked and partially obstructing a lane on I-684.

PUTNAM VALLEY – Deputies responded to a report of a trespass in progress involving an intoxicated individual who refused to leave a residence. The individual was located and dispersed without further incident.

SOUTHEAST – Three individuals were issued appearance tickets for violations of the Town’s open container ordinance.

BREWSTER – An individual was arrested for Obstructing Governmental Administration, Resisting Arrest, and an open container violation. The individual was also found to have an active warrant out of the Town of Southeast.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 30

SOUTHEAST – A driver was arrested for False Personation and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation following a traffic stop. The individual was also found to have multiple active felony warrants and was subsequently turned over to another law enforcement agency.

PUTNAM VALLEY – Deputies responded to a reported verbal domestic dispute. The incident was resolved without further action.

SOUTHEAST – Deputies investigated a reported larceny at a local business. The business declined to pursue charges; however, the individual was found to have multiple active warrants and was subsequently turned over to another law enforcement agency.

Daily Highlights August 26, 27 2026

SOUTHEAST
Deputies arrested a driver after responding to a report of a pickup truck damaging a yard while doing donuts. The driver was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon (4th Degree), Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument, Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, and other Vehicle and Traffic Law offenses.

SOUTHEAST
Following a vehicle pursuit and brief foot pursuit, deputies arrested two individuals. Both were charged with Resisting Arrest and Obstructing Governmental Administration. The driver was additionally charged with Reckless Driving, while the passenger was held as a Fugitive from Justice on an extraditable warrant from Florida.

PHILIPSTOWN
During a traffic stop, deputies arrested a driver for Operating with a Suspended New York Driver’s License and possessing fraudulent temporary license plates.

SOUTHEAST
Deputies arrested three individuals following a larceny investigation at a local business. They were charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property (4th Degree), Unlawful Possession of Personal Identification Information (3rd Degree), and Petit Larceny.

NEGOTIATORS BRING MAN TO SAFETY AFTER HOURS-LONG CLIFFSIDE CRISIS

On Tuesday, August 25, at about 3:48 p.m., the Cold Spring Police Department received a 911 call through the Putnam County 911 Center reporting that a missing 34-year-old man experiencing a mental health crisis was believed to be in the area of Hudson Highlands State Park. Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Sean Kane and Jared Gramble responded to assist the Cold Spring Police Department.

Deputies Kane and Gramble hiked the Washburn Trail and located the man standing on a cliff ledge. After making contact, they immediately began communicating with him while additional specialized resources responded to the scene, including the Putnam County Hostage Negotiation Team, the Westchester County Police Hostage Negotiation Team, and the Westchester County Police Emergency Services Unit.

For approximately two hours, Putnam County Hostage Negotiator, Investigator Matthew Tunney, remained in constant communication with the man, patiently building trust and encouraging him to return to safety.

Following the prolonged negotiation, the man voluntarily stepped away from the cliff and was safely escorted from the area without injury. He was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.

“I’m incredibly proud of everyone who responded to this incident,” said Sheriff Brian Hess. “This was a true team effort that required patience, professionalism, and compassion. Thanks to the dedication of our deputies, negotiators, and partner agencies, this individual was unharmed and received the help he needed.”

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office thanks all of the agencies and personnel who assisted during this incident, including the Cold Spring Police Department, Westchester County Police, New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Putnam County Bureau of Emergency Services, the Cold Spring, North Highlands, and Garrison Fire Departments, members of the Orange County Technical Rescue Team, and all Putnam County Sheriff’s Office personnel whose professionalism, coordination, and teamwork helped bring this incident to a safe resolution.
