As Memorial Day Weekend begins, Putnam County encourages residents to take time to remember the true meaning of the holiday: honoring the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.

While many will gather with family and friends this weekend, we also invite everyone to attend a local Memorial Day ceremony or parade to pay tribute to those who gave their lives defending our freedoms.

Across Putnam County, communities will come together to remember our fallen heroes with ceremonies, parades, moments of reflection, and the placing of flags in their honor. Their sacrifice must never be forgotten.

May is a time to recognize both Mental Health Awareness Month and Older Americans Month, and this year’s theme, Champion Your Health, is a reminder that mental health is part of healthy aging.

Stigma can keep older adults and families from reaching out for help. One way to change that is simple: talk about mental health the same way we talk about any other part of health, with respect, honesty, and compassion.

Every journey begins with a first step. The Putnam County Office for Senior Resources is here to help you take that step with confidence. Our dedicated case management staff can connect you with valuable information, services, and resources to help you live your best life and remain safely and independently in our community for as long as possible. Call us today to learn how we can support you or a loved one at 845-808-1700 or check us out online at www.putnamcountyny.gov/osr.

Elementary school students from across Putnam County visited Tilly Foster Farm today to help welcome and officially name one of the newest additions to the farm family — a brand new baby calf named “Oreo”!

The name was chosen by the school children of Putnam County, and today the kids got to meet Oreo in person while enjoying a fun and educational day exploring all that Tilly Foster Farm has to offer.

Students toured the farm, visited with baby ducks, the goats, chickens and more! They learned more about agriculture, animals, and nature at this incredible county park and educational institute.

Thank you to everyone who helped make today such a memorable experience for our young residents and welcome to Putnam County, Oreo! 🖤🤍

This was a day worth celebrating. With permission, we are honored to share this special moment - an adoption that reflects hope, resilience, and the power of community. Behind every adoption like this, there are foster families who step forward during a child’s most difficult moments. They provide safety, consistency, and compassion when it’s needed most. If you’ve ever considered becoming a foster parent, please contact the Department of Social Services at 845-808-1500, ext. 45230. Our department provides training, guidance, and ongoing support every step of the way.
