Motor Vehicle Incident – Vehicle Into Lake | W. Lakeshore Drive

On May 17th at approximately 12:35 AM, the Lake Carmel Fire Department was dispatched to a reported motor vehicle incident involving a vehicle in the lake on W. Lakeshore Drive, with reports indicating it was unknown if any occupants remained inside.

Due to the severity of the initial call and the unknown circumstances, a pre-planned response was initiated to ensure adequate resources were available if needed. As part of that response, Carmel Fire Department and the Mahopac Falls Dive Team were dispatched to assist. However, after arriving Lake Carmel Fire Department units quickly assessed the situation and confirmed all occupants were accounted for, both Carmel Fire Department and the Mahopac Falls Dive Team were canceled and placed back in service prior to arriving on scene.

Within minutes, Rescue 17-6-1 arrived on scene and confirmed one vehicle partially submerged in the water with one occupant safely out of the vehicle and on shore.

Firefighters immediately donned water rescue suits and began operating alongside 17-Marine-1 to contain leaking fluids in the water and mitigate any environmental hazards. Crews also assisted the towing company with rigging operations to safely remove the vehicle from the lake.

One patient was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Lake Carmel Fire Department would like to thank all responding agencies for their assistance and teamwork throughout the incident.

The Lake Carmel Fire Department is proud to officially welcome our brand new Marion Pumper, 17-2-1, into the fleet — replacing our longtime 1989 pumper after decades of dedicated service to our community.

17-2-1 will serve as our first-due apparatus for:
🔥 Structure Fires
🚨 Fire Alarms
⚠️ Gas Leaks
🚒 and much more

Over the next week, our members will be outfitting the truck with equipment, completing driver/operator training, and preparing it for service so it’s fully ready to protect the community when needed.

This new apparatus represents a major investment in the safety of both our firefighters and the residents we serve, and we couldn’t be more excited to see it hit the road.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the entire Truck Committee and our Firematic Officers for the countless hours spent designing, planning, and outfitting this vital piece of apparatus. Your hard work and dedication made this possible.
