Join us for the next Henry Meade Williams Local History Lecture: “Living Like White Folks: Langston Hughes in Carmel,” presented by poet Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts, poet and President Emeritus of the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation.

Ruchowitz-Roberts taught composition, literature, public speaking, and humanities at Monterey Peninsula College for 32 years and has spent decades bringing poetry to life through readings, translations, and community programs across the region.

Henry Meade Williams Local History Lecture Series: Langston Hughes in Carmel

Long before he came to Carmel, Langston Hughes had established himself as one of America's most distinctive literary voices, moving readers with poetry that gave expression to both the personal and the universal.

Join us for "Living Like White Folks: Langston Hughes in Carmel," presented by Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts, poet and President Emeritus of the Robinson Jeffers Tor House Foundation. Together, we will learn how Hughes confronted questions of race, identity, and belonging that were so important throughout his life.

Sanders will explore how transit milestones, from the famed 17-Mile Drive to the region’s motorsports legacy, reshaped commerce and tourism, transforming the Monterey Peninsula into a global destination.
