She has significant dementia. She is not confident when you wheel her up to the piano. She tells you she doesn’t remember how to play but she wants to try. She doesn’t remember the day, the month or the year. She fiddles on the keys and then she remembers the songs she learned to play as a child. She feels good about her self. She feels like herself. Music is powerful stuff.

Hoosiers ask your legislators to make aging in place a priority. We need more of these adult day centers, not less. The nursing home lobbyists have too much say in Indiana. Too many dollars go to nursing facilities. And wouldn’t it be great if Medicare dollars helped cover day visits? It is preventative care. Adult day centers keep Hoosiers at home longer, which saves Medicaid dollars in the long run. Aging Hoosiers deserve better.

What do you think is a fair wage for home health workers and paid caregivers? Baby Boomers need to demand better pay for their caregivers. Families need to demand more too. What type of care do you want for your loved one? What quality of care do you want some day?

I admire potential clients that ask me how much my student nurses earn from the hourly paid rate. My caregivers earn 68% of what the family pays Choosing Home.

Demand home care companies pay their caregivers a higher wage. Demand Medicare set the example for private insurance payers to increase reimbursement for home care staff. We need quality, committed caregivers.

With about 10,000 baby boomers retiring every single day, home care is one of the fastest growing, most needed occupations in America. But there's a problem: The current median pay is just $10.49 per hour. Economics correspondent Paul Solman reports on why these vital workers get paid so little.

Medicare Advantage changes coming and maybe very beneficial to consumers. Will have to wait and see how it all plays out. More changes likely to be seen in 2020 enrollment. Switching plans is tedious and traditional Medicare has benefits too. Meet with a SHIP counselor to determine what’s best for you.

Medicare Advantage plans will be allowed to cover adult day care, home modifications and other new benefits. But they may not be available to all enrollees every year.
