Salado Isolation Mining Contractors (SIMCO) is strengthening its commitment to local education and workforce development through a $40,000 grant sponsoring a Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) lab at Hobbs Alternative Learning Center.

The new STEM lab will broaden access to hands-on learning in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, providing students with meaningful opportunities to develop the skills, confidence and knowledge needed to pursue future education and career pathways.

“Through our partnership with the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation STEM centers, we are making a strategic investment in the future of our students and our community,” said Ryan Flynn, SIMCO Deputy Program Manager.

Members of the WIPP - Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Communications and Emergency Management teams recently hosted offsite emergency responders from the Eddy County Sheriff's Office and the Carlsbad Police Department for a tour of the facility's surface and underground operations. The tour provided firsthand insight into WIPP's transuranic waste disposal mission and safety protocols. During the tour, responders met with WIPP representatives and gained a better understanding of how transuranic waste is received, processed, downloaded underground, and safely emplaced for permanent disposal. Responders also met with WIPP Protective Force to discuss shared security procedures, response strategies, and tactical coordination.

With all the moving parts to this facility, every single person is so important and vital to the safety and production of the facility. The tour supports WIPP's official agreement with local emergency agencies to ensure seamless coordination and shared emergency readiness. Joint events like this reinforce interagency communication, ensure alignment during potential emergency scenarios, and demonstrate a shared commitment to regional public safety.

Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO) is now accepting grant proposals from non-profit agencies throughout Eddy and Lea Counties for its 2026 Employee Investment Advisory Committee program. The program is now in its fourth year.

The program’s 2026 funding priorities are:
– Arts & Culture/Community Vitality
– Children, Youth, and Families
– Food Security
– Health & Human Services
