Good morning, it's been one hell of a season and it's still in full swing. We are busting at the seams like all, other rehabs. These babies are flying in left and right and most of them are because mom was relocated(which is illegal) or killed by pest controls, homeowners and cars. People need to do better and be better. There are ways to get mama to leave and she will gladly take her babies with her. Raccoons are amazing mamas and to take her away by relocating gets her and possibly her babies killed. She searches and tries to get back to her babies just as we humans would do. Please stop hurting our wildlife they were here first and are just trying to survive. Please reach out to your local rehab or any good rehab as we would much rather give you the steps to evict than raise the babies ourselves. I have attached some ways to humanely evict in order to help anyone that may need it. Give mama a chance to take her babies and leave. Save a life and do better and be the change this world needs.
How to Humanely Evict Raccoons
- Sonic Boxes, to use, rig in the direction of entry point.
- βRepel All", this is basically granulated ammonia. Itβs an irritant and will not be tolerated. If you know where the entry points are, scatter the βRepels Allβ in those areas. Please do NOT scatter on the actual nest.
- Amber Strobe lights, raccoons will not tolerate flashing lights for long. Rig as closely to the nest as possible.
-Soak rags of vinegar or raccoon urine, which can be found on Amazon and toss in area you donβt want wildlife *re-soak every 2 days
- A Portable Radio can be rigged and tuned to talk radio throughout the day, while raccoons are trying to rest and relax. If itβs a mama, nursing in a quiet, safe environment becomes impossible.
- Fox Urine (spray application), foxes are natural predators for raccoon kits. If a mama smells that near her den, she will relocate.
- NOTE: Never use mothballs as they are highly flammable and extremely toxic.
If you have a nursing mama in your attic, please bear in mind that it will take her some time to relocate her entire family. Consider she could have up to eight (8) babies and her backup nest is one mile away...
Once the critter has moved on, you MUST repair area of entry, or another family will move right in.
If these steps would have been followed, if help would have been sought out sooner and humans were a little more thoughtful, Optimus Prime might still be here. He would be a year old now and as long as humans were careful he could be thriving. Instead he was beat for being in a storage unit as a kit just trying to survive, eat and have a place to live. I will remember his story, his adorable face and the cuddles while he died in my arms. It will remain fresh in my mind and guide me year after year to advocate, rehabilitate and educate those willing to listen and learn. He is my guiding light here at Lost Child Wildlife and will forever be the reason I take one more after being full, cuddle the dying critical so it knows love and that not all humans are bad and why I will push through all the sleepless nights and long days. Optimus Prime deserved better so we need to be better.
