Thanks to U.S. Senator Susan Collins prioritizing rural people and economies, Caratunk is the recipient of 2 bridge replacements through a grant specifically aimed at helping rural areas!
After the December 2023 Rain Disaster, it became apparent that the insufficiency of Caratunk’s bridges were endangering our paved roads and Main St. homes. Even after extensive outreach to MDOT, DEP, and Maine Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), there was no remedy for these state-owned bridges simply because Caratunk was small and rural. I then reached out to Senator Brad Farrin, Republican lead on the Transportation Committee, and explained our dire situation.
According to the press release, “funding comes from the Competitive Highway Bridge Program, created by Senator Collins in 2018.
“Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced that Maine will receive $65 million for two rural infrastructure projects through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Competitive Highway Bridge Program.
“$38,712,000 - Critical Connections: Preserving Mobility for Rural Economies
“This project will replace 11 state-owned bridges across rural central Maine. The project spans seven of Maine’s counties: Androscoggin, Franklin, Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Sagadahoc, and Somerset. All 11 bridges that will be replaced are in poor condition, over 50 years old, and have exceeded their original design service life. The replacement bridges will be designed with a 75-year service life.” Two of the 11 bridges that will be replaced are as follows:
-Main Street in Caratunk built in 1922 crossing Pleasant Pond Stream
-Pleasant Pond Road in Caratunk built in 1945 crossing Pleasant Pond Stream”
HUGE THANKS to Senator Farrin and MEMA for recognizing our situation and encouraging Caratunk’s inclusion in this DOT grant…. And of course, thank you Senator Collins for prioritizing rural Mainers in providing this miracle for us!
