If you travel Bloomfield Rd over I-55 you will want to plan an alternate route starting Tuesday, May 26th. MoDOT Southeast District expects bridge work to be complete by Friday June 5th.

Bloomfield Road in Cape Girardeau County will be closed as construction crews perform bridge maintenance. This section of roadway is located from Siemers Drive to Cape West Crossings in Cape Girardeau. Weather permitting, work is scheduled to begin at Tuesday, May 26 at 7 a.m. with completion anticipated Friday, June 5. The road will remain closed while work is underway. The work zone will be marked with signs. Motorists are urged to use extreme caution while traveling near the area.

Even Bobby D. Cat made it into the group photo for National Public Works May 17th - 23rd.

This year’s theme, “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” recognizes the essential services public works professionals provide every day to keep our communities safe, connected, and running smoothly.

Many public works services go unnoticed until something goes wrong. But Public Works is all around you every single day. Take a few minutes next week to notice when things go right:
• Traffic signals and signs that help get you where you’re going safely
• Trash and recycling carts being emptied
• Clean safe water coming from your faucets
• Wastewater systems that work when you flush
• Ditches and storm inlets that help reduce flooding
Public Works is proud to serve our community every day, working behind the scenes to improve quality of life for everyone!

Guess who almost got stuck on the river side of the flood wall today? Crews closed the Themis Street flood gate this morning but luckily (for me) the Broadway gate should remain open. These gates are closed to help protect the downtown area from flooding during high river levels. You can learn more at www.cityofcape.org/levee

Pothole season is in full swing and we’re out patching! 🚧
Ever wonder why potholes seem to pop up after a harsh winter? Snow and ice melt, water sneaks into tiny cracks in the road, and when temps drop, it freezes and expands—making those cracks bigger. Add in a few rounds of freezing and thawing plus everyday traffic, and boom… potholes.

While many streets in the city are maintained by our crews, some fall under MoDOT’s jurisdiction or are privately maintained. Holes in city maintained streets can be reported at www.cityofcape.org/pothole while issues on Kingshighway, William west of Kingshighway and Highway 74 can be given to MoDOT at https://www.modot.org/report-road-concern

Thanks for bearing with us while we work to make your ride as smooth as possible.

Routes are running on normal schedule both this and next week. Enjoy your weekend.

Leaf Season is winding down, and we’re making our final rounds! If you still have leaves at the curb, give us a call at (573) 339-6351 or email [email protected] so we can be sure and get them next time we are in your area.
If your leaves were left it may be because:
• Sticks, branches or other debris were mixed into the pile
• The pile was blocked by a vehicle, mailbox or trash cart
• Leaves were placed in the street instead of beside it (within 3’ of the curb)
We are ready to wrap up the season and head on into Spring.
