U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 9-10, Cape Coral/Fort Myers, FL

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 9-10, Cape Coral/Fort Myers, FL Flotilla 9-10, Fort Myers / Cape Coral, is active in Lee County, Florida. We promote boating safety classes, vessel safety checks, and marine safety.

A “Coast Guard Auxiliary” (CGAux) Flotilla is the smallest unit within the volunteer component of the US Coast Guard. All Flotillas may perform any of the 11 specific Missions of the US Coast Guard except law enforcement. As volunteers, we purchase our own uniform equipment etc. and are not compensated in any way for our time. As a unit of the Department of Homeland Security’s Coast Guard, we are

not a boating club or an educational institution. Flotilla 9-10’s 80 plus members live within the Cape Coral and Fort Myers areas of Lee County Florida, closely working with the Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Beach. As part of our primary mission to promote recreational boating safety: certain members obtain Coast Guard certification to perform vessel safety checks; to supply retailers with free information brochures for the public; and, to train the members and public. Our coordinators for those tasks are listed here. Vessel Safety Check:

We hope to see you tomorrow at the Cape Coral Hurricane Expo at the German American Club on Pine Island Road, 9 am — 1 pm.

If you cannot join us tomorrow, please keep these important safety points in mind as we navigate hurricane season here in Southwest Florida.

Staying safe after the storm passes is just as important as the preparation before it hits. Whether you are recovering at home or supporting local response efforts, the USCG Safety Center (SAFECEN) wants to remind everyone of critical hazards that pop up during cleanup and recovery.
Keep these vital safety tips in mind:

1. Carbon Monoxide (CO) – The Silent Killer
Power outages mean more generators and fuel-burning devices.

Never operate generators, grills, or fuel-powered tools indoors, in garages, or near open windows and doors.
CO is colorless and odorless. If you experience headache, dizziness, nausea, or confusion, get to fresh air immediately and call 911.

2. Hidden Debris Hazards (Asbestos & Lead)
When clearing storm damage, be highly cautious around older building materials.

Disturbing asbestos containing materials (ACM) or lead-containing paint (LCP) can pose severe health risks.
Reminder: Coast Guard personnel are not authorized to handle ACM or LCP cleanup. Restrict access to damaged areas and leave it to licensed professionals!

3. Reconstitution & Abatement
As units and homes get back up and running, lingering hazards require interim controls. Stay coordinated with Safety and Environmental Health Officers (SEHO) and Safety and Risk Management (SARM) Councils to ensure proper follow-up assessments are completed.
