VFW Post 8463 proudly celebrates National Women Veterans Recognition Day.
This day is not a separate Veterans Day for women. Rather, it commemorates the signing of the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act on June 12, 1948. This historic legislation granted women the right to permanently and fully serve in the regular Armed Forces and to be recognized as veterans for that service.
Before the passage of this act, many women who served our nation during times of war were sent home when conflicts ended. Despite serving alongside their male counterparts, they were often denied the recognition, rights, and benefits afforded to other veterans simply because of their gender. As noted by the Department of Veterans Affairs, the act “deemed women essential to war efforts and allowed them to serve in the regular armed forces full time.”
Women have answered the call to serve throughout our nation’s history- from the Revolutionary War and Civil War to today’s military- serving as nurses, support personnel, intelligence operatives, pilots, leaders, and in countless other roles critical to our nation’s defense.
Today, and every day, we honor and salute all women veterans, regardless of when, where, how, or for how long they served. Whether or not your state officially recognizes this day, your service, sacrifice, and dedication to our nation deserve our gratitude and respect.
Thank you for your service.
