16APR26: Spring is finally here! It feels like it’s been forever since we’ve enjoyed those beautiful low 70s with calm seas.
There’s no better way to kick off the spring season than with some outstanding training alongside the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City.

Tonight, we’re conducting Helicopter Operations (Helo Ops) with the USCG MH-60T “6060” participating in critical training. This exercise focuses on safely removing distressed mariners from their vessels and transferring them to the helicopter for life-saving care and support.

As the weather gets warmer, please remember to always wear your life jackets and practice safe boating. We will always be here, always ready. Standing by CH 16 & 22a!

08APR2026: Yesterday, duty crews at Station Cape Charles conducted a towing exercise with the USCGC Bear. This valuable hands-on training enhances our crews’ readiness and prepares them to respond effectively in any maritime situation.
A special thank you to CDR Webb and the entire crew of the Bear for taking the time to train with us. We look forward to future training opportunities with CGC Bear and other U.S. Coast Guard units!

22FEB26: Just your typical late-February day in Virginia: 50 mph wind gusts, heavy wet snow, and a classic coastal storm rolling through. But this is exactly what we’re built for. Our Search and Rescue crews are fully trained, equipped, and mission-ready for conditions just like these. We’ve handled it before, and we’re standing by. Eager and prepared for whatever happens.

Stay safe out there. We’ve got your back. 💪❄️

19JAN26: Happy Monday and a very Happy New Year to everyone! This morning, the dedicated crews at Station Cape Charles kicked off the week with essential Visual Distress Signal (VDS) and flare training. Coast Guard boats and personnel carry three key types of pyrotechnic signals:
• MK-79 red-star flares
• MK-124 day/night hand-held flares (with smoke and flare capabilities)
• MK-127 white parachute illumination flares

These powerful tools serve critical roles in real-world scenarios, from signaling a mariner’s exact location during distress to lighting up large areas for nighttime searches and rescues. This foundational training is vital for Search and Rescue operations. It ensures our crews cannot only save mariners in distress, but also protect themselves when the mission demands it.

18NOV25: They say fair weather doesn’t make a good sailor — though it certainly makes training more enjoyable. We train in all conditions to ensure we’re ready for any situation when you need us most. In this video, the 45699 receives a throw bag from SN Dane Mathews aboard the 29272 as they prepare for a stern tow — the first and most critical step in a USCG towing evolution. Whatever the weather and whatever the situation, we’re here and ready to respond. When you need help, you can count on us to be standing by.

12NOV25: ATTENTION TO ADVANCEMENT. Huge congratulations to BMC Connor Herrick on his advancement from Petty Officer First Class to Chief Petty Officer. BMC has not only been a spectacular shipmate while acting as XPO at STA Cape Charles, but an all around outstanding leader of men and women. BMC has also received orders this morning to become the Officer in Charge at STA Chincoteague this summer. We have full confidence that BMC will thrive in his new leadership position and contribute to making his station one of the premier units in the United States Coast Guard. Thank you, Chief. From all of us here, you’ll be missed more than words can say. Fair winds and following seas. BZ!!

03SEP25 - Today, the crew at Station Cape Charles took time to focus on maintaining readiness through physical fitness. Members completed their PT test and then hit the field for some sports, building teamwork and camaraderie while staying mission-ready.

Staying active and working together off the water is just as important as the work we do on it. Strong bodies, strong teams, and strong service. ⚓💪

This Fourth of July, Coast Guard Station Cape Charles is partnering with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies as part of Operation Dry Water. This nationwide effort targets boating under the influence and promotes safe, responsible behavior on the water.

Our crews will be actively patrolling throughout the holiday weekend, conducting safety boardings and ensuring compliance with boating laws. You can also expect to see officers from the Virginia Marine Police, Department of Wildlife Resources, and other agencies working alongside us.

If you’re hitting the water, keep these safety tips in mind:

✅ Always designate a sober boat operator
✅ Make sure everyone wears a life jacket
✅ Carry a working VHF radio and required safety gear
✅ Know the forecast and avoid boating in poor weather
✅ File a float plan with someone you trust
✅ Stay alert and keep a proper lookout at all times
✅ Make sure navigation lights are working if operating at night

Boating under the influence is not only illegal, it puts everyone at risk. Don’t let poor decisions ruin what should be a safe and fun holiday.

Our goal is simple: help everyone return home safely. Celebrate responsibly and enjoy your Independence Day on the water.

23JAN25: Iron sharpens iron. And yes, That is our marina frozen! This afternoon duty crews at Station Cape Charles conducted 2 boat training in sub-freezing temperatures to better prepare us for future rescues in less than ideal conditions. We work tirelessly on days like these so we can uphold the Coast Guard’s motto of “Semper Paratus” or “Always Ready”. Anytime, anywhere we will be ready.
