Hunsley Road Street Maintenance | Aug. 23–26

Microsurfacing street maintenance is scheduled for Hunsley Road Sunday, Aug. 23 through Wednesday, Aug. 26, beginning near Freedom House Church and continuing east of Turkey Track Trail.

A few important things to know:
- Work will not take place while children are in school. Crews will begin after 5 p.m. each day to avoid disrupting traffic around Crestview Elementary.
- Hunsley Road will remain open to two-way through traffic throughout the project.
- Temporary lane closures and traffic shifts may occur while crews are working.
- Access for residents, businesses and emergency services will be maintained at all times.
- The roadway will be fully reopened at the end of each workday.

Motorists traveling through the area after 5 p.m. should drive slowly, use extra caution and allow additional time for possible delays.

4:00 pm Update: Water pump stations are back at full capacity.

**Public Advisory**

There is a power outage in the North Canyon area including, but not limited to Madison Park and Spring Canyon. Xcel is aware and is working to resolve the issue. Currently there is no known eta. This is affecting water pump stations in those areas. Residents could experience drops in water pressure. Please practice conservation efforts until Xcel is able to resolve the issue.

CPD Investigates Crash on US 87 and Russell Long Blvd.

CANYON, TEXAS - The Canyon Police Department (CPD) is investigating a single-vehicle crash that occurred on August 13, 2026, at approximately 5:30 p.m., at the intersection of southbound US 87 and Russell Long Blvd.
The preliminary investigation indicates that a red 2018 Toyota C-HR hatchback, driven by a 63-year-old male from Amarillo, Texas, left the roadway while traveling south on US 87 and struck a traffic signal light pole in the southeast corner at the intersection of US 87 and Russell Long Blvd. The vehicle had one passenger, a 36-year-old female from Tulia.
Both the driver and the passenger were transported to a local hospital. The driver has since been released, however, the female passenger is in critical condition.
The crash remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this stage of the investigation. All further questions regarding this incident may be directed to CPD Captain Matthew Coggins at [email protected].

City crews are working to repair a water and sewer line in the 200 block of 19th St. If you see water on the streets in this area, this is very likely the source.

We are excited to announce the graduation and swearing in of two of our new police officers, Officer Gunner Tyler and Officer Blake Tversky! Both officers have been attending the Randall County Sheriff's Office Academy since January. Their law enforcement careers begin on Monday as they start their 15 week Field Training on patrol. Congrats to all of the graduates!

On Tuesday, July 28th, Officer Johnny Amaya was promoted to Corporal, and Officer Joshua Brassfield was promoted to Sergeant. Congratulations to both of these well deserved promotions within the Canyon Police Department!

Cpl. Amaya has been with CPD since August of 2022. He has an associate's degree from Amarillo College and is a graduate of the Panhandle Regional Law Enforcement Academy. Cpl. Amaya has spent his entire police career with CPD, spending time in patrol, and is currently a School Resource Officer, part of the Emergency Response Team, and is a licensed Paramedic.

Sgt. Brassfield has been with CPD since August of 2024. He has an bachelor's degree from WTAMU and is a graduate of the Amarillo Police Academy. Sgt. Brassfield has spent his entire police career with CPD in the patrol unit, as well as serving as a crisis negotiator, drone pilot, and member of the crash investigation team.

**Assistance Needed**
On 5-16-26 at approximately 11:00pm, Canyon PD Officers were dispatched to the Lumberyard on an assault causing bodily injury. Officers were later provided with cell phone video footage of the incident. We are needing assistance identifying the two females hitting and kicking the female on the ground.
