Public Notice:

Due to anticipated hot, dry conditions, residents are reminded that the annual New York State Burn Ban is currently in effect through May 14.

Open burning of brush is prohibited during this period. The ban is in place to reduce the risk of wildfires and protect public safety.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Amanda Lefton announced today that the annual statewide ban prohibiting residential brush burning begins March 16 and runs through May 14. Since 2009, DEC enforces the annual brush burning ban to prevent wildfires and protect communities and first responders during heightened conditions for wildfires.

04/28/2026

A Red Flag Warning has been issued in St. Lawrence, Clinton, Franklin, and Eastern Essex Counties from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. today due to very low humidities, and stronger winds that are expected to combine to produce an increased risk of fire danger. If a fire is present, it can become extreme. During this time, dry weather, low humidity, and wind will spread fires easily, which will then become large and dangerous wildfires.

PREPARE NOW:
• Be aware of local burn bans being in place by visiting your city/town/village website.
• Keep leaves, debris, or flammable materials at least 30 feet from your home.
• Close doors and windows. Designate a room that can be closed off from outside air.
• Learn your evacuation routes and practice evacuating with your family and pets. Make sure you know where to go if you need to leave.

If a fire occurs, ACT:
• If local officials tell you to leave, leave immediately.
• Pay attention to emergency alerts for information and instructions.
• Limit your exposure to smoke. Use an N95 mask to protect yourself from smoke inhalation.

Everybody loves free stuff!!!

SUNY Potsdam's Center for Preparedness is pleased to announce that the campus will host the NY Citizen Preparedness Training Program on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at 12:00 PM in Kellas Hall, Room 106. The event is free and open to the public, though registration is required.

Brought to the community by the New York National Guard, New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services, and SUNY Potsdam, the NY Citizen Preparedness Training Program is designed to give New Yorkers the tools and resources they need to prepare for any type of disaster — natural or man-made — respond accordingly, and recover as quickly as possible. With severe weather events becoming more frequent and more extreme across New York State, this training has never been more timely or important.

During the course, participants will learn how to properly prepare for emergencies, including how to develop a family emergency plan and how to stock up on essential emergency supplies. Each family that attends the training will receive a free preparedness kit.

The training is part of a statewide initiative through the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services' Citizen Preparedness Corps. The program has trained thousands of New Yorkers across the state and continues to expand its reach into communities large and small.

Local first responders, community members, and families are all encouraged to attend.

Registration is required. To register, visit www.prepare.ny.gov or use the link below or the QR code from the flyer.
