We are incredibly proud of our dispatchers!

The Stark County Communications Center—known as StarCom—was honored at the 2026 Gold Star Awards, which recognizes excellence in public safety communications.

Our StarCom team was nominated for Dispatch Team of the Year for their extraordinary efforts on March 13, when winds reaching 75 miles per hour swept through Stark County. During this severe weather event, dispatchers Tyler Combs, Andrew Crano, Breanna Keyser, Kendl Dell, Emily Haas, Alexis Hazelett, and Patrick Arnold—along with Supervisor Terry Curry, TAC Officer Holly Paul, and Major Ryan Carver—worked tirelessly as emergency calls surged by 233% over a five-hour period. All 19 of the police and fire agencies we serve were stretched to their limits responding to incidents across the county, and our team rose to the challenge with unwavering professionalism and calm.

Dispatchers Emma Eaton and Inger Ryder received Gold Star Awards for their exceptional actions during an April call involving a three-year-old who was choking and turning blue. Their steady guidance and commitment to providing life-saving support over the phone played a crucial role in helping achieve a positive outcome for the child and their family.

Our dispatchers are highly trained and handle emergencies every day, but moments like these remind us that they are the first of our first responders. Their dedication, resilience, and compassion make a tremendous difference in our community.

Everyone at the Sheriff’s Office gets so excited whenever an adoptable dog comes to visit—especially when he’s as adorable as this little guy!

Bev Lazar and Jen Hall were completely smitten with our latest visitor, Malachai, and honestly…who wouldn’t be?

This three-year-old terrier was found wandering near a corn field in Louisville. He’s safe and sound at the Dog Warden Office, but he really wants to find his forever home with his forever human or family.

And, boy, does Malachai have a lot to offer:
• At just 12 pounds, he’s the perfect little bundle of love
• He’s super-sweet
• Fully healed from neuter surgery
• Has a clean bill of health from his vet check
• Is microchipped and vaccinated
• Is ready to charm his way straight into someone’s heart

Maybe you’re the perfect human for Malachai? If so, come visit him right away! 🐶❤

This week, we partnered with The Wheeling for an Operation Lifesaver event to identify drivers disregarding flashing lights and lowered gates. Uniformed law enforcement officers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Uniontown Police Department OHIO joined us on the train as it traveled from Brewster to Hartville.

During the trip, we observed six violations. When a driver failed to stop for active warning signals, nearby units were notified to conduct traffic stops.

Please stay safe: Always stop for lowered gates and flashing lights.

CANTON, Ohio, September 16, 2026 – On September 12, 2026, the Stark County Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with other members of the Stark County OVI Task Force, conducted two sobriety checkpoints in Louisville—one in the 1100 block of W Main Street and the other in the 1000 block of N Chapel Street.

A total of 780 motorists were contacted during the operation, which was supported by grant funding from the Ohio Department of Public Safety. These high-visibility enforcement efforts included deputies from the Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Canton Police Department, the East Canton Police Department, and the Louisville Police Department.

As a result of the checkpoints:
• One driver over the age of 21 was arrested for OVI (operating a vehicle while impaired) and received two misdemeanor charges of child endangering;
• Four drivers were cited for driving with suspended licenses; and
• Nine drivers were issued other citations.

Sobriety checkpoints, also known as OVI checkpoints, are primarily designed to deter and detect impaired drivers to reduce alcohol- or drug-related crashes and enhance road safety.

The Sheriff’s Office announces checkpoints in advance, as required by law, and this transparency helps ensure they receive public attention. That awareness further deters drunk driving, which is the ultimate goal.

Although sobriety checkpoints may cause brief delays, they are conducted in compliance with state and federal guidelines and are designed to minimize inconvenience for law-abiding motorists.

It was a fantastic day at Canton Carnival of Wheels! We were glad to be there with Stark County Safe Communities and support Stark State’s Automotive Technology Scholarship Fund.

Thanks to our Citizens Academy alumni, we provided free child ID cards—an important resource for families to have in case of an emergency.

A big thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with us. We truly appreciate you!

Sheriff Weisburn and a great group of employees and volunteers had a fantastic time at the Perry Township Parade! We were all set up and ready for the Fall Festival, but a storm rolled in and sent us packing. 🌧️💨😄 Thanks to everyone who came out—we hope to see you next year under sunnier skies!
