Historian Town & Village Canton NY

Historian Town & Village Canton NY Canton NY Historical collection of photos, documents, diaries, map, and many resource materials for genealogical research.

The Historian's page is a way to put the many, many photos from glass plate negatives to the hundreds of negatives that have now been digitalized by local native Dennis Barr. He has spent hours scanning and enhancing many of these photos. Also I would like to open up the communication with all who live in the north county and across the nation that still remember the "good old" days in Canton. I w

ill be posting all the weekly unidentified photos that go in the Plaindealer and the correct identifications that the readers call back on the numbered photos. I would appreciate feed back to help make this a very useful, informative page on Canton's rich history.

Today, we honor the brave men and women of the United States military who have sacrificed their lives defending our freedom. Here are a few glimpses of Canton Memorial Day celebrations from the past--Image 1: Jerry Thomas in 1952 casts a remembrance wreath into the Grasse to honor those we’ve lost; Image 2: The 1944 parade captured by the keen lens of Dwight Church (printed on a vintage postcard); Image 3: the parade passing the American House hotel (now the Post Office) most likely in the 1900s or 1910s.

As many of you may have heard, Linda Casserly—who enthusiastically served as Canton historian for 29 years—passed away this past weekend on May 2nd. This is a sad loss for the Canton community. From the moment I met Linda, I knew how much she loved being the Canton historian. She had a deep knowledge of its history and shared her passion for it with everyone who visited the historian’s office. I send my condolences to her family and friends and all those who knew and loved her. Linda, you will be missed. https://northcountrynow.com/stories/linda-ann-disantis-casserly-79-of-canton,368483

A picture of Canton's Municipal Building from the summer of 1980 (the Golden Arches peeking out in the background). I love the warm color of prints from this era. This picture was donated to the Historian's office by Chas. Carvel 2/3/1981.
