Big changes are coming to West Main Street!

City Engineer Bethany Watson breaks down the upcoming West Main Street Pedestrian Corridor project, designed to create a safer, more connected, and vibrant walkway linking Historic Downtown Canton to The Mill on Etowah.

What to expect:

🚶 Wider Walkways: 10-foot brick-paved sidewalks, benches, and improved landscaping.

🚗 New Traffic Pattern: transitioning West Main Street to a one-way westbound traffic flow with angled parking.

💡 Enhanced Aesthetics: Decorative lighting and underground utility lines to eliminate overhead wires.

🏗️ Infrastructure Upgrades: Brand-new storm drains and replaced water and sewer mains.

🗓️ Timeline: Construction begins in early fall 2026 and is estimated to take around 20 months.

On Sept. 11, 2026, Mayor Bill Grant issued two veto letters for approved cases ANNX2605-011, request to annex, and RZON2605-010, request to rezone, of +/- 48.192 acres located along Ball Ground Highway and Fate Conn Road.

"I do not take the authority granted to the Mayor under Section 2.23 of the Charter of the City of Canton lightly," said Mayor Bill Grant. "This is the first time I have exercised that authority.

"My decision to veto this ordinance is not a statement against growth, development, or attainable housing," Mayor Grant continued. "Rather it reflects my responsibility to consider the long-term interests of the City of Canton, the consistency of our decisions with our adopted plans, the responsible extension of our City boundaries, and the safety and quality of life of our residents. I believe our community deserves growth that is thoughtful, coordinated, responsible, and consistent with the standards we have established for everyone."

The vetoes will be up for discussion and possible action at the Sept. 17, 2026 City Council Meeting. You can find the meeting agenda with the link to the veto letters at https://canton.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx
