Our Legal Word of the Week this week is: Emancipation! According to thelawdictionary.org, emancipation is defined: "1) The act by which one who was unfree. or under the power and control of another, is set at liberty and made his own master. 2) freeing a minor child from the control of parents and allowing the minor to live on his/her own or under the control of others. Emancipation may also end the responsibility of a parent for the acts of a child, including debts, negligence or criminal acts. Sometimes it is one of the events which cuts off the obligation of a divorced parent to pay child support."
