City of Canton Fair Housing Commission We protect people from housing discrimination on the basis of a protected class. We do provide the following services:
1.

The City of Canton Fair Housing Commission investigates complaints of unlawful housing discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, s*x, familial status, disability, ancestry, military status, s*xual orientation and gender identity. We are not permitted to give legal advice on any landlord tenant dispute issues. If you are in need of legal advice, we recommend you contact

the Stark County Bar Association (330)453-0685 where you can be referred to an attorney. Qualified individuals my receive free legal advice by calling Community Legal Aid Services at (330)456-8361 or 1-866-584-2350. Random testing of housing opportunities to determine if Fair Housing practices are being followed;
2. Conciliation for parties involved in housing disputes such as tenant/landlord issues, discrimination or, if necessary, litigation;
3. Listening to your experience, evaluating your case and informing you of your rights and your options;
4. Investigating and testing your claim of discrimination and assisting with the filing of a complaint when appropriate;
5. Helping to conciliate your case with the offending party, or referring your case to attorneys who are experts in fair housing litigation;
6. Providing property owners concerned about their rental practices with educational materials and information to assist them in their efforts to maintain compliance with fair housing laws.

April is Fair Housing Month! It is the 57th anniversary of the Federal Fair Housing Act of 1968. The Fair Housing Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968, 7 days after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

The Fair Housing Act prohibits discrimination in selling, renting, and financing housing and other housing-related activities based on race, s*x, color, religion, disability, family status, and national origin.
