Volunteers Needed: Nimishillen Creek Watershed Creek LEAP

Saturday, September 19th

Help us keep our community’s waterways clean and beautiful! We are looking for volunteers to join us for the Nimishillen Creek Watershed Creek LEAP on Saturday, September 19th.

Check-in: 8:30 AM at the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum
Cleanup begins: 9:00 AM
Lunch: Following the cleanup in the McKinley Museum Auditorium

Volunteers will spread out throughout Stadium, Monument, and Waterworks Parks, as well as the grounds surrounding the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, to remove litter and debris from our local waterways and parks.

Please be prepared to get wet! Some cleanup areas may require volunteers to enter the creek, although most areas will be accessible from dry land. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and clothing you don't mind getting dirty.

Last week our Executive Director Kim Kenney was in Washington, DC to attend the Presidential Sites Summit. She had the opportunity to visit the The Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum and was excited to see Canton's very own Bernetta Miller honored in their exhibitions! Bernetta is one of the Early Birds, who are honored for completing a solo flight before 1916. The first four images are from the Air & Space exhibition, and the last photo is Bernetta's pilot's license from our collection. In 1912 she became the 173rd person -- and 5th woman! -- to earn her pilot's license.

You can learn more about Bernetta, and many other early aviators, in Kim's book Canton's Pioneers in Flight, which is available in the Museum's online shoppe: https://mckinleymuseum.org/product/cantons-pioneers-in-flight/

On this day, 125 years ago, President McKinley died. While shaking hands with the public, he was shot in the Temple of Music at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo on September 6. Eight days later, he was gone. This telegram from our collection was sent to George Frease, publisher of The Repository and a friend of the president, from George Courtelyou, the president's personal secretary.

Twenty-five years have passed. Today, our community gathered on the grounds of the McKinley National Memorial to remember.

The Canton City Fire Department’s 9/11 Memorial Climb was an incredible and moving experience to witness as firefighters, first responders, families, and members of our community came together to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001—25 years ago today.

Watching participants climb the steps of the Memorial in remembrance of those who never made it home was a powerful reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and unity that followed that tragic day.

And then, to look across the grounds at the traveling "Remembering Our Fallen" memorial and the faces of service members whose lives were lost in the years that followed September 11 made the day even more meaningful.

Do you remember where you were that September day?
