Proud to continue the tradition in New England by repairing and restoring these old floors, but boy, that whole no-scale thing can make it so hard to patch these old terrazzo floors!
He mixed the marble chips by eye. No scale, no recipe, just a shovel and thirty years of knowing what the floor was going to look like once it was ground down.
Terrazzo came over with the men from Friuli and the Veneto, and once it landed here the Italian crews owned the trade outright. Banks, courthouses, school corridors, the lobby of the building where you renew your license. Somebody's grandfather knelt on that floor and set every brass divider strip in it by hand, bending each one around the curves with his fingers. 🧱
The brass was not decoration. It kept the field from cracking and it let him change color from one bank of chips to the next. That compass rose in the middle of a city hall floor is a man on his knees with a pair of pliers.
And the trade took his knees. A lot of those men were finished by fifty five and walked for the rest of their lives like the job was still under them.
Is there a terrazzo floor near you that somebody in your family laid, and do you know which building?
