On Friday, April 24th at approximately 12:00, Canterbury Vol Fire Co. along with Scotland VFD, and Central Village Fire Dept were dispatched to the area of 213 Brooklyn Road for reports of a working brush fire. Units were advised by dispatch that the fire was located 1/4 of a mile into thick woodland area and roughly 100’ by 100’ in area size. Due to the remote location of the fire, incident command requested additional UTV’s and manpower. Plainfield Fire Dept was added for their equipment and manpower. Once on scene, units worked quickly to keep the fire under control along side with the homeowners who assisted the crews with their own forestry equipment and tractors. Crews were quick to knock down the main portion of the fire and extinguished subsequent spot fires around the area.

We at CVFC would like to thank our members and mutual aid departments for their quick response and dedication to keeping our community safe. A big thank you to the homeowners for their support with their forestry equipment and by digging a fire line prior to our arrival.

We would also like to remind everyone that this spring season has been extremely dry and windy. It does not take much for a small fire to grow into something uncontrollable in these conditions. Please keep an eye on the weather and the local fire danger by visiting https://portal.ct.gov/DEEP/Forestry/Forest-Fire/Forest-Fire-Danger-Report and by checking the CVFC sign for the daily fire danger level.

On Saturday, 3/28/2026 at approximately 1430, Canterbury VFC along with units from Central Village FD, Scotland FD and Chaplin FD were dispatched to 48 Graff Road for reports of a brush fire. Units arrived on scene to find an approximate 25ft x 25ft grass fire with a few large trees involved. Units worked quickly to extinguish the main fire and took careful and controlled measures to drop the dead trees and not take out the homeowner’s power lines.

Shortly after the fire was under control, Canterbury VFC along with Lisbon FD and Central Village FD were dispatched to a fire alarm at Dr Helen Baldwin Middle School. Units on scene identified a broken fire sprinkler head in the boys locker room. The scene was placed under control and the basketball tournament taking place in the gymnasium was allowed to continue.

We would like to thank our mutual aid departments along with Canterbury DPW and Eversource for their swift response. We also wish the basketball teams best of luck in their tournaments!

We would also like to remind the public that there is absolutely no open burning during high fire danger days. Any questions regarding fire danger warnings or permit acquisitions, may be directed to the Fire Marshal’s office.

At Approximately 22:00 on Sunday 3/15/2026, Canterbury VFC was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in the area of 407 Westminster Rd. Units on arrival found the operator of the vehicle pinned inside the passenger compartment. Additional resources were requested for extensive extraction and ALS patient care from Scotland VFD and American Ambulance. Weather was not safe at that time for air ambulance support. Crews of Engine 193 and Engine 116 were successful in an invasive extrication of the patient and transferred to Ambulance 593. Patient was transported to Backus Hospital for further treatment of injuries.

At this time, Westminster road is closed for investigation. Please seek alternative routes. We wish for a full recovery for the patient. Canterbury VFC would like to thank Scotland VFD and American Ambulance for their rapid response. Any questions will be directed to Connecticut State Police Troop D.
