BLM-Royal Gorge Recreation

BLM-Royal Gorge Recreation This is the place for maps, photos and information about responsible recreation on YOUR public lands

The Royal Gorge Field Office in Canon City, Colorado, manages 680,000 surface acres of public land along the Front Range and 6.8 million sub-surface acres. Since the field office spans such a large area, it covers a variety of terrain and is involved in a multitude of activities. We have nearly 90 recreation sites, 2 Special Recreation Management Areas, 5 Wilderness Study Areas, and 487 miles of streams and rivers.

It was a great day to brainstorm on project work with our partner Rocky Mountain Field Institute.

We were out and about today scoping out a new project location for this field season. We are excited to partner with the BLM-Royal Gorge Recreation to improve access to Guffey Falls aka Paradise Cove. Stay tuned for more info about volunteering!

Texas Creek has a new sign thanks to our Off Highway Vehicle crew. They are finishing up a busy summer. The crew is partially funded through your Colorado OHV registration fees.

Broken Boyfriend-south is a great addition to Buena Vista’s current trail network. The views are amazing from the trail. Thanks to all who put in your time and support.

Due to today's wonderful group of 13 volunteers, 2 CMC Crew Leaders & a BLM employee... the brand-spankin'-new 1.1-mile long Broken Boyfriend-South trail is OPEN. This project has taken quite a few years to go from dream to reality, but it is worth the wait. For mt. bikers, the trail is rated "EXPERT", but is a great way for hikers and trail runners to get off CR304 while enjoying gorgeous views. Many THANKS go to BLM-Royal Gorge Recreation for working with the BV community to get the recent proposal approved and for funding the first 2 week Southwest Conservation Corp. (SCC) crew that did such amazing work on the trail. Thanks much to the support of the Town of Buena Vista and Buena Vista BV Parks and Recreation. Also huge thanks to the local businesses who participate in the BV 1% for Trails program: Eddyline Brewery, Eddyline Restaurant at South Main, Louie's Ice Cream Shoppe, Boneshaker Cycles & new addition, The Trailhead, for supporting local trails! The financial support of these businesses & the many community individuals who have donated money & volunteer time is absolutely invaluable. The funding made it possible to hire expert trail designers & crew leaders from the Colorado Mountain Club (CMC). FYI: As with all newly built trails, it takes some time & use to really firm up. There will still be some tweaking & polishing & the signs are temporary, so be patient while getting out on the new goods :-)

Working with these young ladies to make a difference on public lands. Thanks for posting BVSC!

Yesterday, the elevateHER girls joined Linda Skinner from the BLM & Nancy Anderson from BVSC for a day of social trail rehab work. First, they learned how to make a trail "disappear", then split into 2 groups, each group starting at one end & working toward each other. Rehab work is challenging... making sure that the old social trail ends up looking as natural as possible takes a good eye & lots of muscles & sweat! Since our community agrees to close old, eroded social trails when we work with the BLM to get approval for new, sustainable trails, the work the girls did was very important. THANKS, elevateHER, for teaching young women the value of stewardship!
