Don’t be fooled by their rhetoric. Albany Democrats fired the first shot in the gerrymandering war when they redrew congressional district lines to favor Democrats in 2024, when President Biden was in office. Now, in a purely partisan attempt at cementing one-party rule, Albany Democrats want to make gerrymandering forever legal in New York to eliminate Republican-leaning districts.

In New York the voters are sovereign. In 2014, the people of New York, Democrat and Republican, enshrined anti-gerrymandering into the state constitution when they approved a constitutional amendment to prohibit partisan gerrymandering and create the Independent Redistricting Commission. That’s the will of the people of New York. This is just the beginning of this fight.

We want to ensure reporters, and New Yorkers, have the facts: New York Democrats started the national redistricting fight in 2020. And they haven't stopped since.

This isn't about politics. It's about protecting a fair process and holding Albany accountable for a blatant attempt to gerrymander congressional districts for political gain.

Congratulations to Lynneesa Mitchell, founder and director of Purrfect Kitty Mission, on the grand opening of her cat rescue center at 619 W. State St., Olean. With care and compassion, Ms. Mitchell and her team are dedicated to helping alleviate the ongoing feral cat crisis in the city of Olean through spaying/neutering rescued and finding homes for the cats and kittens they rescue. I wish them nothing but success and I was honored to be part of their grand opening celebration.

Congratulations to Franklinville Central School/Ten Broeck Academy Middle School Math and Science Teacher Jeff Haskell, who was nominated by his colleagues to receive an Assembly Teacher Appreciation Week Citation from my office. Ten Broeck Academy Principal Robert Hirsch said, “Jeff's students consistently outperform their peers in the region and throughout Western New York on state exams, showcasing his exceptional teaching abilities. Beyond his classroom duties, he has also made significant contributions as a coach for cross country, softball, and basketball, earning a reputation as a Hall of Fame coach.” We are blessed with many incredible educators like Mr. Haskell across the 148th District. To celebrate and honor them, I reached out to schools across the district seeking nominees for Teacher Appreciation Week Citations.

It was an honor to be part of the annual Memorial Day observance hosted by the Olean American Legion and city of Olean at Lincoln Park. Thank you to the Scouts for serving as our Color Guard and the Olean High School Band and Chorus for rousing renditions of the “Star-Spangled Banner,” and “God Bless America.” Memorial Day is a sacred day. It’s a solemn reminder of the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our great nation, so that we can live in freedom. All across the 148th District, folks gathered for parades and in parks and cemeteries to remember our military heroes and honor their sacrifice. Thank you to everyone who helped organize Memorial Day observances and all those who attended. It’s a privilege to represent you in the New York State Assembly.

It’s always wonderful to have student leaders from the district visit me in Albany. June Hilmey, a junior at Allegany-Limestone High School, shadowed me during session as a delegate to the Students Inside Albany Program this week. She was in the Assembly Chamber as bills were debated and voted on, and also took a tour of the state Capitol building. Thank you to the League of Women Voters of New York State Education Foundation for supporting the Students Inside Albany Program.
