A great birding moment at George L. Fordyce Park! 🐦

The Black-crowned Night-Heron has made its first appearance of the year at Fordyce Park—and this one was spotted perched high in a tree!

These herons are often seen near water, so catching one taking a break among the branches made for an extra special sighting. 👀

In continued partnership with The Nature Conservancy, treatments to manage Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) are underway in Mill Creek Park and will continue over the next several weeks, weather permitting.

Treatment will begin near the northern end of the East Cohasset Trail and progress south along the East and West Cohasset Trails and Chestnut Hill Drive toward Canfield Road. Treatment methods will include basal bark applications using backpack sprayers as well as direct tree injections.

Trails will remain open to the public during treatment activities. Visitors may notice small forestry paint markings on some hemlock trees throughout the treatment areas. These markings are used by crews to identify and track treated trees.
This work is part of an ongoing effort to protect eastern hemlock trees from Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, an invasive insect that can cause significant decline and mortality of hemlocks. A large portion of the treatment costs will be covered through a cost-share program administered by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry.
