Message from the Chief of Police

The number one priority of the employees of your Police Department is service to the citizens of our community. These are challenging times for Police Departments across our great nation. In order to be successful as a Police Department we have to have strong relationships with our members of our community. Without community input many cases would never be solved.

Caney PD appreciates our community and we appreciate the support our community gives us. We will work hard each and everyday to provide the best service possible to our community and to make our community safer each and every day. As your Police Chief, I have an open door policy. I encourage community involvement and encourage community feedback. Please feel free to stop by and speak with me at the Police Department, if you have concerns or issues you need addressed. I look forward to working with each of our community members. Chief of Police
Kevin Kitterman

Press Release – Mayfest 2026

The Caney Police Department would like to remind everyone that Mayfest 2026 is only one week away. As in previous years, there will be several street closures and traffic changes throughout the duration of the festival.

We understand these closures can create inconvenience for residents and businesses; however, they are necessary to ensure the safety of all attendees and to help make Mayfest a safe and enjoyable event for our community. We take great pride in helping support this annual celebration and want to make sure everyone knows what to expect before the festivities begin.

The event layout and street closures will be very similar to previous years’. Organizers have planned another outstanding event, including the 4th and Live concert Friday night, vendors throughout the festival, and numerous family-friendly activities.

Street Closures and Event Information

Thursday, May 21, 2026

• 4th Street near State and Spring Streets will be closed after 5:00 PM for stage setup and concert preparation.
• These areas will remain closed until after the Friday night concert concludes and stage breakdown.

Main Street Closure

• Main Street from 4th Street to 3rd Street will remain closed during the entirety of Mayfest.
• This closure is necessary to ensure first responders maintain clear emergency access routes outside of the festival area.

Friday, May 22, 2026

Beginning at 8:00 AM on Friday morning, the following closures will take effect and remain in place until Saturday evening after vendors and events have concluded:

• 4th Street from McGee Street (Highway 75)
• One block on both sides of 4th Street (to 3rd and 5th Streets).
• Wark Park and surrounding streets for vendor and event setup
• Areas including:
o 4th Street to Ho**er
o McGee to Ho**er on 5th Street
o Ho**er and Ridgway (one-way area)

Important Reminder to Residents

Residents who live within barricaded areas will still be allowed access to and from their residences. In some cases, residents may need to temporarily move barricades to enter or exit. This privilege applies to residents only.

The Caney Police Department will be enforcing Kansas Statute 68-2106, which makes it a misdemeanor offense to unlawfully drive around barricades or enter closed roadways without authorization.
If you have a unique circumstance requiring access to a barricaded street, please contact the Caney Police Department at 620-879-2141 or speak with an officer working the event for assistance.
We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation and look forward to another successful Mayfest for the City of Caney.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

City of Caney, Kansas Police Department

Subject: Timely Reporting of Incidents to Improve Public Safety

The Caney Police Department is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. We are asking for the public’s cooperation in reporting incidents directly to law enforcement at the time they occur, rather than posting information on social media after the fact.

While social media can be a useful tool for sharing information, it is not a reliable or effective method for reporting emergencies or ongoing issues. Delayed reports—especially those made days later through platforms such as Facebook—limit our ability to respond, investigate, and address concerns appropriately. In many cases, officers are unable to act because the situation is no longer active when it is brought to our attention.

For us to effectively enforce laws, respond to disturbances, and ensure public safety, we must be notified in real time. Whether it is a noise complaint, suspicious activity, or any other concern, contacting the police department directly allows officers to respond promptly and take appropriate action. Calling individuals or other city departments only prolongs a timely response and costs valuable time to respond.

What You Should Do:

• For emergencies or crimes in progress, dial 911 immediately.
• For non-emergency concerns, contact the Caney Police Department directly at the non-emergency number 620-879-2141.
• Provide as much detail as possible so responding officers can address the situation efficiently.

We value the partnership we have with our community and appreciate your cooperation in helping us serve you better. Prompt reporting ensures that we can take action when it matters most.
For questions or additional information, please contact the Caney Police Department.

Big shoutout to the MGSO Dispatchers! They dropped off a huge basket of goodies for Telecommunications Week for Caney's Dispatchers, and it definitely didn’t go unnoticed.

Thank you, MGSO, for showing some well-deserved support to the heroes behind the scenes. Dispatchers don’t always get the credit they deserve, but they play a critical role in keeping all of us safe every single day.

We appreciate you!

Caney PD/EMS would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Barbi’s and the team at ESE in Caney, Kansas, for the wonderful lasagna and rice they prepared and provided for our staff.

Gestures like this are a powerful reminder of the incredible support we receive each day from our community and from the outstanding local businesses that stand behind Caney PD/EMS.

We do not always get the opportunity to publicly recognize every individual or business that supports us, but please know your generosity never goes unnoticed and is deeply appreciated by our officers, EMTs, and dispatchers.

Thank you again to the Barbi’s and their entire team at ESE for your kindness and continued support of our department.
