Director of Ontario County Public Health Kate Ott states, “Most people in Ontario County are vaccinated and are not at risk of getting measles. If unsure of your vaccine status, contact your healthcare provider.”

Measles Cases in Ontario County:

Ontario County Public Health is investigating two related cases of measles in unvaccinated residents. The department was notified of the positive results on August 31, 2026. Both residents safely isolated at home while they were at risk for exposing others. To protect privacy, additional details about the affected individuals will not be released.

Risk to the Public:
The overall risk of measles to the general public is low, particularly for individuals who are fully vaccinated against the disease. However, measles is extremely contagious, and anyone unvaccinated, pregnant, under 12 months of age, or immuno-compromised is at a higher risk and should talk with their health care provider if they believe they may have been exposed.

The Director of Ontario County Public Health, Kate Ott states; “Most people in Ontario County are vaccinated and are not at risk of getting measles. If unsure of your vaccine status, contact your healthcare provider.”

Adults born prior to 1957 are presumed immune because they would have had the illness in childhood – yes, it is that contagious - prior to the advent of vaccine. If you have symptoms of measles such as fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes and rash; isolate, wear a mask and call ahead if you plan to seek medical care in a provider’s office, urgent care or emergency department. It’s very important they know you are coming.

Measles can be a serious illness. It is estimated 1-3 individuals out of every 1,000 (0.1%-0.3%) die due to complications of the disease. Complications can include pneumonia, encephalitis (brain inflammation), and ongoing neurological damage. Measles can also interfere with your body’s immune response to other vaccine preventable diseases.
