The Virginia Blue Bells are in full show and a walk downstream river left is my favorite wild flower in this neck of the woods at Franklin County's only covered bridge. Speaking of walks, a walk-a-bout with yours truly is at Walnut Creek Park, (dead end of Parkview Drive) Canal Wi******er 9AM tomorrow 4/17/21. Masks required. Bring binoculars if you have them, oh and tick spray.

The Walnut is flowing at 9100 CFS. Our gauge at 400 Ashbook Road is 9.33 feet above normal pool or 748.8 feet. Approximately 6" additional rise in the floodplain and Ashbrook Road at our location will flood just north of the covered bridge. The creek is rising at this writing. The number one pollutant of the creek, silts and clay, carried with runoff from tilled land and home construction shows up as suspended sediments. One large leaning American Sycamore just east of the Gender Road bridge is under aquatic siege at this writing and will be interesting to watch.

This morning the water flow is at 500 cu.ft./sec and clearing. My secchi disk was visible at 19 inches or 14.4 mg/l of suspended sediments. Water temperature at the covered bridge is 53*F.
Singing males at the covered bridge: Red-bellied Wood Pe**er, Blue Jay, Northern Cardinal, Mourning Dove, Common Flicker, American Robin, Carolina Chickadee (visual), Common Grackle, Turkey Vulture (vis), Carolina Wren, Tufted Titmouse and European Starling (vis). 3/26/20

Wow! What a difference a day makes. The Walnut at Ashville, Ohio is flowing at 3,400 cu.ft./sec. and rising. Just stay home and restring the Zebco.

Checked the Walnut at 10:30 AM on 3/18/2020. Flows are a little up at 315 cu.ft./sec but water is pretty clear at the covered bridge off of Washington Street in Canal Wi******er. There is light spotty foam at 45*F water temperature. There were no midge hatches here but Tree Swallows were active probably scooping up adult midge in the area last Sunday. Smallies probably are not moving at these water temperatures but Sauger and White Sucker may be active. I plan on fishing the Walnut Creek next week if suspended solids from the rain doesn't scare me away. A lead 3/4 oz jig or a single end-hooked worm with no weight floated through pools may produce for those satisfied with slow action. I will know next week. There is ample public access on the Walnut Creek near the covered bridge and parking behind the CW middle school on Lithopolis Rd. for public creek access. The Walnut Woods Metro Park at the east side of Groveport also has significant access to the Walnut Creek not to be confused with the Big Walnut Creek on the north- west side of Groveport or the Little Walnut Creek near Marcy that has no public access. I would not plan a float trip on the Walnut as there are many down trees to navigate. Thanks for reading, Dick Miller

The U.S. Board of Geographic names has approved the naming of Mingwe Run as of April 11, 2019. The stream heads in violet Twp. 2.6 mi. NE of Pickerington @ 39*55'14"N, 82*44'14"W and flows SW and W through the City of Pickerington to enter proposed Pickering Creek that flows through Pickerington Ponds Metro Park. The U.S. Board is to vote on the Pickering Creek name in June of 2019. This creek has never received any official naming by the Board and carries no official name. The stream has a confluence with the George Creek just north of Wi******er Pike near the border of Canal Wi******er and Columbus, Ohio.

We have submitted (to the US Board of Geographic Names, proposed stream names (Pickering Creek, Fox Run and Mingwe Run that are tributaries to the George Creek that runs through Pickerington (Pickerington Metro Park), & southeast Columbus and Canal Wi******er to The Walnut Creek in Walnut Woods Metro Park. Fox Run was accepted. Mingwe is under study as this is a First Nation name associated with the Seneca-Cayuga Peoples. Pickering Creek name is also on hold waiting for comments within Franklin County. See US Board of Geographic Names minutes - domestic Names 804th meeting. The March meeting of USBGN may help in naming these unnamed tribs to the Walnut Creek.
