Public Service Announcement from New Lebanon Central School District

CANAAN FIRE - FD-Fuel OUTDOOR THRUWAY WB B14.7-B16.8 (I 90 WB, ROUTE 295 / TSP NB TO THRUWAY WB, I 90 WB)

On June 3rd, 2026 at 1240 Columbia County NY 911 dispatched East Chatham Fire Co., Inc. and under automatic mutual aid Canaan and Red Rock Volunteer Fire Company for a fuel spill on I-90 West Bound.
East Chatham responded with 7540 and Car 1. Canaan responded with 3440 with crew and Car 1. Red Rock responded with 7612 with crew and Car 2.

East Chatham Car 1 arrived on scene and established command, confirming an active leak from a punctured fuel tank on a Semi.
Canaan 3440 arrived on scene and Canaan Car 1 used Plug N' D**e to seal the ruptured fuel tank. Crews from all 3 companies built earthen dams to mitigate the fuel spill and prevent it from spreading.
Fire Coordinator Office - Columbia County, NY Car 2 arrived on scene to assist with the deployment of absorbent boom in the culvert of I-90.
Crews were also assisted by NYS Thruway Authority workers with traffic control and providing more absorbent materials.
NYS Department of Environmental Conservation ECOs responded.

The scene was turned over to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

On May 31st, 5 of your Canaan Firefighters graduated from New York State Division of Homeland Security & Emergency Services Basic Wildfire Suppression taught by NYS Department of Environmental Conservation Ranger Jackson. Firefighters teamed up with members of Spencertown Fire Company, Claverack Fire District, City of Hudson Fire Department, Lebanon Valley Protective Association, Valatie Fire Department, East Schodack Fire Company, Stuyvesant Falls Fire Department, STOTTVILLE FIRE CO. #2'S.
Members learned about wildland fire behavior and suppression techniques. The training ended with a field exercise, the class split into two teams to "cut" a fire line.

The class was hosted by Fire Coordinator Office - Columbia County, NY .
