Spring Repair Café Comes to the Village of East Nassau — with String Instruments, Leather, 3D Printing, and More
Columbia NE Repair Café comes to Hoag's Corners Firehouse this May with specialty repairs including string instruments, leather, and more
EAST NASSAU, NY — Spring is the season of renewal, and the Columbia NE Repair Café has the perfect way to celebrate by giving your broken, worn, and beloved-but-damaged belongings a second life. On Saturday, May 30, the Repair Café will hold a free event at the Hoag’s Corners Firehouse, 7237 NY-66, East Nassau, from 10 am to 2 pm. All are welcome, and all repairs are free — because the most sustainable thing you can do is keep using what you already own.
This event is extra special. In addition to the Repair Café’s full roster of skilled volunteer fixers, May 30 will feature a special guest repair coach for string instruments — a rare and exciting addition that makes this event a must-attend for anyone with a guitar, violin, or other stringed instrument in need of some love. The event will also spotlight leather repair, 3D printing for select repairs, and knife and tool sharpening — specialty skills that don’t come around every day.
“We’re so excited to bring this event to East Nassau,” said Paul Morone, one of the event’s organizers, member of the local Climate Smart Committee and town board council member. “The string instrument coach is a real treat — if you’ve got an instrument sitting in a closet because it needs repair, this is your moment. And honestly, every one of our repair coaches is special. Come see what your neighbors can do.”
What Will Be Fixed
Volunteer fixers will be on hand for a wide range of repairs, including:
• String instruments (special guest repair coach)
• Leather repair
• 3D printing for select repairs
• Knife and tool sharpening
• Bicycles
• Clocks
• Lamps
• Clothing and textile mending
• Small wood furniture
• Electrical and mechanical repairs
• Gluing and general repairs
The two-item-per-person limit helps ensure everyone gets quality time with a fixer. And a reminder: clothing, fabric and household items must be clean, and guests are asked to stay with their belonging while we attempt to repair it. This is when the magic happens!
About the Columbia NE Repair Café
The Columbia NE Repair Café is a free community repair service operating across five towns and villages in Columbia County: New Lebanon, Canaan, Chatham, Austerlitz, and the Village of East Nassau. Events are organized by the Climate Smart Community Committees of each municipality and are supported by NYSERDA and the New York State Climate Smart Communities program.
Since its founding, the network has facilitated nearly 1,420 repairs — 1,324 items fully fixed and another 94 partially repaired — diverting hundreds of items from landfills and strengthening community bonds one fix at a time. Repair Cafés are part of a growing global movement based on a simple idea: skilled neighbors helping neighbors fix things.
