Earlier this month, Santa Clara County Fire Department partnered with the City of Cupertino to host a vital Heartsaver CPR/AED training class for Cupertino volunteers and Medical Reserve Corps members.

To maximize the impact of this session, we also opened seats to our dedicated CERT Academy Graduates, bringing together a total of 14 lifesavers who either earned or renewed their CPR certifications!

In a cardiac or choking emergency, every second counts. Continuous training ensures our community volunteers are ready to step in when it matters most.

Did you know? As of March 1st, 2026, the American Heart Association (AHA) updated its curriculum regarding choking relief and infant CPR. Our students are now fully trained on these latest, life-saving techniques!

We are grateful for our ongoing partnership with the City of Cupertino - City Hall . Thank you to all the students who dedicated their Saturday morning to sharpening their skills. Your commitment to community safety is remarkable!

Santa Clara County Fire Department received reports of a barn fire on Sunday, May 17 at approximately 2:24pm near Uvas Reservoir. County Fire responded along with mutual aid from Gilroy Fire Department and San José Fire Department , and a state response from CAL FIRE Santa Clara Unit .

Unfortunately, the fire destroyed one residence and a nearby storage building located up a steep, narrow road. Yesterday’s high winds were a significant factor resulting in fire spreading to approximately 1/4 of an acre of surrounding vegetation.

Firefighters stayed on scene for fire watch throughout the night to address potential flare ups. We’d like to thank our mutual aid partners for responding to help keep the community safe. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

This incident highlights how quickly high winds can drive flames into surrounding vegetation. We urge all rural and Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) residents to maintain at least 100 feet of defensible space around their homes. Clearing dead vegetation and trimming low-hanging tree branches can make all the difference in protecting your property. Community members can learn more tips for establishing defensible space and hardening their homes at sccfd.org/rsg.
