👷‍♂️ Wastewater Operator Spotlight: Alexander Cabrera 👷‍♂️

This week, we're highlighting Alexander Cabrera, one of the dedicated professionals who helps keep Camp Verde's wastewater collection system operating smoothly every day.

Alexander first came to Camp Verde more than 20 years ago and quickly fell in love with the area's cool evenings and diverse landscape. Following the economic downturn in 2008, he established and incorporated a painting business after initially working throughout the Verde Valley as a handyman.

His passion for the outdoors led him to his next career opportunity at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, where he managed environmental abatement projects in coordination with the National Park Service. His ties to the Verde Valley eventually brought him back home, and he joined the Town of Camp Verde team in 2021.

During his time with the Town, Alexander has earned his Class A Commercial Driver's License, his Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification, and most recently achieved ADEQ's Level 3 Wastewater Collections Operator Certification. His commitment to professional growth helps ensure Camp Verde's wastewater infrastructure continues to be maintained at the highest level.

When he's not working, Alexander is a proud father of three beautiful daughters. He enjoys exploring the outdoors through backcountry trips in Grand Canyon National Park, visiting his parents' pomegranate orchard, fly fishing, cooking, and working on vehicles. More recently, he's developed a passion for exploring Arizona's backroads on his dual-sport motorcycle.

Whether he's operating the vacuum truck, inspecting sewer lines, maintaining infrastructure, or responding to system needs throughout town, Alexander plays an important role in protecting public health and keeping Camp Verde's wastewater collection system functioning efficiently.

The next time you see the Vac Truck working in your neighborhood, there's a good chance Alexander is helping ensure that one of the services most people never think about continues operating reliably every day.

Thank you to Congressman Andy Biggs for taking the time to meet with Verde Valley mayors today for a productive and thoughtful discussion on issues impacting our communities.

Today’s conversation focused on several key priorities for the Verde Valley, including rural representation and state priorities, preserving local control amid legislative changes, state-level revenue reductions and the funding challenges they create, economic development and rural investment opportunities, and the importance of strong communication and ongoing engagement.

We appreciate the opportunity to share the unique challenges and opportunities facing rural Arizona and look forward to continued collaboration in support of our region.

🌳 Streets Division Update 🌳

The Streets Division recently completed tree trimming and vegetation management work in the Black Bridge area. Removing overgrown vegetation and trimming trees helps maintain clear roadways and surrounding areas, improves visibility for motorists, and enhances safety for both drivers and Town maintenance crews.

These routine maintenance efforts play an important role in keeping Camp Verde's transportation network safe, accessible, and well-maintained throughout the year.

2026 General Plan Spotlight: Gateway Interchanges Character Area

As we move toward the July 21, 2026 Primary Election, the Town of Camp Verde will continue highlighting each Character Area identified in the proposed 2026 General Plan so residents can better understand the vision, priorities, and policies that will guide Camp Verde over the next 10 years. Voters will consider adoption of the General Plan on the July 21 ballot.

*Character Area Highlight: Gateway Interchanges
The Gateway Interchanges Character Area encompasses the primary entry points into Camp Verde from Interstate 17, State Route 260, and Middle Verde Road. As the first impression many visitors have of Camp Verde, this area plays an important role in shaping the identity and visitor experience of the community.

Today, the area includes a mix of traveler-oriented businesses such as gas stations, convenience stores, restaurants, and highway commercial uses. Due to its visibility and regional access, the General Plan identifies this corridor as a strategic area for future commercial and service-oriented development that serves both residents and travelers.

The long-term vision for the Gateway Interchanges focuses on creating safe, visually appealing, and welcoming entrances into Camp Verde through:
• Enhanced landscaping and design standards
• Wayfinding signage and gateway features
• Public art installations reflecting Camp Verde’s heritage and natural beauty
• Improved traffic safety and infrastructure coordination with ADOT
• Strategic business recruitment and economic development opportunities
• Partnerships with the Yavapai-Apache Nation to support tourism and shared economic goals

Key implementation strategies identified in the Plan include:
• Recruiting additional traveler services and quick-service businesses
• Protecting scenic viewsheds and promoting low-impact signage
• Partnering with ADOT on traffic studies and future infrastructure planning
• Supporting public art through partnerships and grant opportunities
• Coordinating with the Yavapai-Apache Nation on tourism, development, and infrastructure initiatives

The General Plan envisions the Gateway Interchanges as more than just highway exits, but as welcoming gateways that reflect Camp Verde’s identity, strengthen economic opportunity, and create a positive first impression for residents and visitors alike.

Character Areas do not automatically change zoning or approve projects. Instead, they provide a long-term planning framework intended to guide future decision-making in a manner that reflects community priorities and promotes sustainable growth.

🥒🏓 Did You Know? Camp Verde Has a Thriving Pickleball Community!

What started as a single weekly session in 2016 has grown into one of the most popular recreational activities at the Camp Verde Community Center Gym. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated volunteers and enthusiastic players, pickleball is now offered four days each week and regularly attracts dozens of participants.

Pickleball is a fun, fast-paced sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It's easy to learn, suitable for all ages and skill levels, and a great way to stay active while meeting new people.

Today, players enjoy games:
🏓 Sundays, Wednesdays & Fridays | 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
🏓 Tuesdays | 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

The program is completely FREE and open to everyone. Whether you're a seasoned player or have never picked up a paddle before, volunteers are happy to help newcomers learn the game.

The popularity of pickleball continues to grow in Camp Verde, with some days seeing more than 40 participants utilizing the gym. If you've been curious about trying America's fastest-growing sport, now is a great time to give it a shot!
