Today Volk Field leadership got to see all the moving parts of the Crash Damage or Disabled Aircraft Recovery (CDDAR) Team Chief course. This intensive program brings together a diverse group of participants and instructors from across the nation and around the globe for specialized, hands on training.

The complexity of aircraft recovery requires precision, coordination, and technical expertise. By engaging in these realistic scenarios, attendees are gaining the critical skills necessary to manage challenging recovery operations.

As the course concludes next week, these professionals will return to their home units with the education and confidence required to respond effectively to aircraft incidents. We are proud to host this essential training that strengthens our collective readiness and operational safety.

Over the next ~4 days(Tuesday-Friday), Hardwood Range will undergo a series of prescribed burns conducted by a specialized team of wildland firefighters from the USFS, US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), Job Corps, DNR, and Hardwood Range, with additional support from Volk Field Fire. To ensure these operations are managed safely and effectively, approximately 24 burn professionals are on-site today to facilitate the process. This collaborative effort focuses on ecological restoration by stimulating native growth and curbing the spread of invasive species, while the systematic rotational burning of management blocks ensures more predictable fire behavior across all units.

Beyond the environmental benefits, these burns are critical for maintaining the operational integrity of the range. By clearing overgrowth and restoring native conditions, the project significantly increases visibility and access across the landscape. This improvement directly supports the safety and efficiency of military training operations and ensures that crash, fire, and rescue teams can execute rapid response maneuvers without being hindered by dense or unmanaged terrain.

Today, a F/A-18C aircraft arrived at Volk Field, Wisconsin, from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, to join the Advanced Crash Recovery Team Chief Course.

On April 23, 2026, Marines with Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 11, Marine Aircraft Group 11, and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, alongside civilian contractors with the Aviation Maintenance and Consulting, Stricken Aircraft Reclamation and Disposal Program team, hoisted and loaded the aircraft onto a transport truck at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

The aircraft, which was previously under the oversight of the Type Commander and Program Management Activity 265, was transferred to the Air National Guard to support the Advanced Crash Recovery Team Chief Course at the Combat Readiness Training Center at Volk Field. This transfer ensures that recovery teams have access to the necessary assets for advanced mission-readiness training.
