🚨 Action Needed: Support SB 143 🚨

The Georgia State Firefighters Association is proud to support Senate Bill 143, a critical step toward improving retirement flexibility and strengthening the future of our fire service.

SB 143 will help:
✔️ Provide more realistic retirement options for firefighters
✔️ Allow experienced firefighters to remain in or return to service
✔️ Support recruitment and retention across Georgia

This bill has already passed the Senate with strong bipartisan support, and now it’s time for us to help push it forward.

📣 We need your voice!
Please take a few minutes to reach out to Retirement Committee members and encourage them to support SB 143.

⏰ A subcommittee meeting may take place this Tuesday from 2:00–4:00 PM at the Coverdell Building (pending final confirmation). Your outreach before then can make a real impact.

Together, we can ensure Georgia’s firefighters receive the support and retirement security they deserve.

What a great day of education! Yesterday GCFR and Cairo Fire Department hosted Greene County Fire Rescue Chief Rodney Wiggins to present training sessions on refrigerated containers to firefighters from across Southwest Georgia. This training was developed as a result of Greene County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Chris Eddy tragically lost his life in the line of duty in September of 2024. Thank you to everyone who made this training possible, and to the departments that were represented yesterday. We will continue to honor the life of B.C. Chris Eddy by passing this knowledge on to those around us.

"Just Do It Right" - Battalion Chief Chris Eddy

It was great to see so many departments across the area come together and learn.

01/26/2026

We are pleased to announce that we have partnered with Cairo Fire Department to host Chief Rodney Wiggins of Greene County Fire Rescue this coming February for two training sessions on refrigerated container awareness. This training has been developed after an unfortunate event took place last September that claimed the life of Battalion Chief Chris Eddy in the line of duty.

Please register for either session through the eventbrite QR code on the flyer.

The scheduled meeting for tonight has been canceled. We will let you all know when it is rescheduled for. Stay warm and stay safe.

There is some open spots if your department wants to attend. There is a morning session and an evening session.

This past weekend we put on a live fire instructor class in Bainbridge. Students from seven departments from across southwest Georgia attended the class. Students learned how to lead groups in live fire training exercises, prepare incident action plans, calculate water flow for burn buildings and acquired structures. We would like to thank Bainbridge Public Safety Department for the use of their training ground and burn building, Decatur County Fire Rescue, Grady County Fire Rescue, Lowndes County Fire Rescue, and Cherokee County Fire And Emergency Services for assisting in instructing and leading this class. There was eleven students that completed this course. These students will now be able to lead and assist with live fire training exercises at their departments.
