Hey DoDEA Americas Students! Ready for an epic summer adventure? Second Lady Usha Vance’s 2026 Summer Reading Challenge is here — and this year we’re celebrating the 250th anniversary of America’s founding with even more fun and discovery!

Here’s how to join the adventure:

Read 12 books of your choice (any genres — fiction, nonfiction, classics, or new favorites!) between June 1 and September 4.

Track your reads on the official log.

Submit it for a personalized certificate, an America 250-themed bookmark, a special prize, and a chance to win a trip to Washington, DC with a chaperone!

Every page you turn is a new journey — exploring new worlds, meeting unforgettable characters, and learning something fresh. Let’s make this the best summer of reading yet and show the nation what DoDEA readers can do!

Lunch on the Lawn was a huge success. Thank you to all families who came out to enjoy family empowerment, great food, and community fellowship. It was great to see so many smiles and happy faces. Thank you, parents for your patience as we worked to ensure that each child was safely placed with his/her parent or guardian. We look forward to having more family events in the 2026-2027 school year. Until then...have a great summer break!!

On Friday, May 29, Shughart Elementary School celebrated an unforgettable day of fitness, teamwork, and community spirit as the USO, the Carolina Panthers NFL PLAY60 team, the TopCats Cheerleaders, and dedicated community volunteers visited the campus. Their mission: to inspire students in grades 2–5 to stay active, stay healthy, and have fun while doing it.

From the moment the event kicked off, the energy on campus was electric. Volunteers and Panther's representatives transformed the school grounds into a dynamic activity zone, complete with indoor and outdoor stations designed to get students moving. Whether sprinting through agility drills, mastering teamwork challenges, or cheering on classmates, students embraced every moment with enthusiasm.

Each participant received a special t-shirt and enjoyed refreshing beverages from the USO volunteers. Mrs. Crutchfield, school principal, was delighted to receive a special Carolina Panthers helmet to display in the office.

Parents and Guardians: We are excited to celebrate our students’ achievements during our upcoming Awards Day on Thursday, June 4, 2026. To ensure smooth logistics, avoid conflicts with lunch schedules, and accommodate the middle school program, we will follow our original schedule as outlined below:

Grades K–2: 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM
Grades 3–4: 1:00 PM – 1:45 PM
Grade 5: 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM

Teachers will share an invitation for students receiving an award. Out of consideration for all students receiving awards, we kindly ask that families remain seated for the duration of the program and wait until the conclusion of the program to check out their student(s). This helps us honor each child’s moment and ensures an orderly dismissal process. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we coordinate these events to provide an organized and enjoyable experience for all students and families.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to celebrating with you!

In appreciation,
Ms. Crutchfield
