The Battleship New Jersey is the longest, fastest, most decorated battleship in history. From 1943 to 1991, she served in WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War, and the Persian Gulf. The mission of the Battleship New Jersey Museum and Memorial is to restore, preserve, and exhibit the continuing history of the USS New Jersey and those who worked and served on her so their service will continue to educate and inspire future generations.

Today we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and to honor the first responders and service members who answered the call that day and in the years since. Their courage reflects the same spirit carried by all who have served and sacrificed in uniform, a spirit Battleship New Jersey was built to preserve and share.

There's always work to be done aboard Battleship New Jersey, whether she's in port or underway. This photo from September 21, 1951 shows sailors chipping paint on a quad 40 anti-aircraft gun. While not glamorous, this kind of maintenance was essential to keeping rust at bay and making sure she not only looked good, but operated correctly.

Today, the battleship doesn't have a full crew of sailors to chip, sand, and paint, but we're lucky to have an amazing team of volunteers and maintenance staff keeping her in good repair. You can see their work firsthand when you visit the ship.

September 1968. A UH-46A Sea Knight helicopter from combat store ship USS Mars hovers over the deck of Battleship New Jersey during a vertical replenishment operation.

Resupplying a battleship at sea, known as underway replenishment, could happen by helicopter or ship-to-ship transfer, keeping her fueled, fed, and armed without ever pulling into port.

It took a dedicated crew to keep the battleship operating smoothly. You can learn more about daily life aboard Battleship New Jersey when you visit the ship.

Shout out to our sister ship, Battleship Wisconsin. She's moving for the first time since 2000, being pulled a few feet from her pier for a fender replacement. Wisconsin is currently located in Norfolk, Virginia as part of the Nauticus museum. This operation will take place September 8 to 11. Fair winds to the team taking care of her this week.

September 25, 1983. A Sea King helicopter from Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 5 flies alongside Battleship New Jersey.

Battleship New Jersey had no sonar of her own. She relied on es**rt ships and helicopters like this one to detect and defend against enemy submarines. Next time you're on board, make sure you take a good look at the Sea Sprite helicopter we currently have on the fantail. If you look closely, you'll see it was once armed with sonar buoys.

We will be open Thursday through Monday, 10am to 5pm (last ticket sold at 4pm), and closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays through the end of the year.

This Labor Day, we're thinking of the thousands of skilled tradespeople who built and maintained Battleship New Jersey, from her original construction through her multiple reactivations. This photo shows Shop 72 workers on her forecastle in November 1967, lowering the port anchor chain during the overhaul that would prepare her for deployment to Vietnam.

Their work, and the work of all the people who helped build and preserve her, is why you can still walk her decks.

We're open regular hours today, 10am to 5pm, last ticket at 4pm. Starting tomorrow, we move to our fall hours: closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays, open Thursday through Monday, 10am to 5pm, last ticket at 4pm.

September 19, 1953. Sailors stand in formation on the bow of Battleship New Jersey in Sasebo, Japan. This photo shows two quad 40 Bofor mounts on the bow of the ship, guns that would later be removed for her Vietnam commission.

Today, guests can see the rings left behind on the deck from where these guns once stood.

September 11, 1968. Taken on the fantail of Battleship New Jersey in Hawaii, this shot captures the tail of a UH-34 Seahorse helicopter, the back of Turret III, and interestingly, two vehicles tarped down on deck, which is not something we see in very many photos. It does, however, help illustrate how large the fantail of the ship is.

Today the flight deck has a tent structure on it that operates as our event space, but even still, we have enough room to park a Sea Sprite helicopter next to Turret III, something guests can see when they visit the ship.
