🚔 Reckless Driver Arrested After Pursuit on U.S. Highway 158 🚔

Last night, Camden County deputies responded to U.S. Highway 158 following reports of a reckless driver. Callers reported a black Chevrolet Camaro speeding, swerving into oncoming traffic, and nearly colliding with other vehicles.

A deputy located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The driver, Dalron Purnell, 62, chose to flee. The pursuit continued onto Shortcut Road, where Purnell lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a yard near North River Road.

Purnell, who has 28 prior criminal convictions in North Carolina alone, was highly impaired and uncooperative. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Purnell has been charged with: Felony Fleeing to Elude Arrest, Driving While Impaired, & Resisting a Public Officer. He was issued a $25,000 secured bond, and his vehicle has become property of "The Great North State".

The Camden County Sheriff’s Office will act decisively to stop dangerous drivers before they seriously injure or kill someone. Reckless behavior on our roadways will not be tolerated. Public safety comes first — every time.

🚨🎅 Christmas Convoy Alert! 🎄🚨

Recently, Lights of Christmas rolled into Camden County with a full load of holiday magic—Santa, elves, gifts, and enough Christmas cheer to light up the whole county.

Our Sheriff’s Office was proud to jump in line with our partners in law enforcement, Fire & Rescue and EMS to help es**rt the convoy and usher the elves safely into town. With sirens blaring and smiles beaming, Santa surprises were delivered. Mission accomplished. 🎁🚓

Seeing families light up as Santa arrived is exactly what this season is about. Huge thanks to Lights of Christmas for spreading joy where it’s needed most and letting us be part of something special.

Now that’s how you deliver Christmas. 🎄✨

FEAR MONGERING

The Camden County Sheriff's Office has been overwhelmed with calls from citizens stating they have received calls from "Camden Sheriff's Office" personnel about missing court or warrants for them. The scammer will also leave a number to call and the recording will state something along the line of "this is the Camden County Sheriff's Office Civil Dept." These calls are very convincing to the recipient as the caller is identifying themselves as actual sworn law enforcement officers with the Camden County Sheriff's Office. The one key thing that stands out , the scammer wants you to stay on the phone for an extended period of time, it does not deter the scammer when you tell them you are driving to the Sheriff's Office as long as you stay on the phone. I can only assume that this is a way to "hack" into your cell phone to gather personal information.
We can not say this enough, if you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately and block the number, it is that simple. If you wish, you can call us here at the Sheriff's Office to confirm it was in fact a scammer. DO NOT PLAY INTO THEIR GAME!!!!!
Fear is a powerful tool. Once fear is invoked, the individual will had over what the scammer is requesting on a silver platter, DO NOT BE THIS PERSON, HANG UP THE PHONE!

On December 14, 2025, the Currituck County Sheriff's Office suffered the unexpected loss of K-9 Apollo.

Today, the Camden County Sheriff's Office was honored to stand shoulder to shoulder with our law enforcement partners and participate in the es**rt that brought K-9 Apollo home to Currituck County.

K-9 Apollo served with loyalty, courage, and unwavering dedication. His service and sacrifice will not be forgotten.

We extend our deepest condolences to the men and women of the Currituck County Sheriff's Office, to Deputy Eanes K-9 Apollo’s handler, and to the entire Currituck County community. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

🚨 SCAM ALERT – DO NOT FALL FOR IT 🚨

We have received reports of scammers calling residents while falsely claiming to represent the Camden County Sheriff’s Office. Make no mistake—this is a scam.

Here is the rule:
If you have any doubt about a caller claiming to be from our agency, hang up immediately. Then, call the Camden County Sheriff’s Office or Dispatch directly using a known, official phone number.

Remember:
Our office will not demand money over the phone.
We will not threaten arrest or legal action by phone.
We will not ask for personal or financial information from unsolicited calls.

Do not provide Social Security numbers, banking details, gift card information, or any form of payment to someone you do not personally know—period.

If you believe you have been contacted by one of these scammers, report it to the Camden County Sheriff’s Office so we can document it and warn others.

Stay alert. Verify first. Protect yourself and your neighbors.

THIEF ALERT!

These two decided to steal a credit card from one of our hardworking Camden County citizens and go on a shopping spree in Elizabeth City.

These criminals were all smiles, as they were captured on surveillance cameras splurging on someone else's dime. Luckily, these stores don't like thieves either and have been helping us investigate.

If you can identify these goons, or know where we can find this vehicle, please let us know so we can give them their participation awards...matching silver bracelets and a taxpayer funded trip to an all inclusive resort called Albemarle District Jail.

Camden County woke up to a blanket of snow this morning, and even our deputies took a moment to enjoy the rare sight. Deputy Thompson was caught making snow angels in full uniform — proof that even on cold mornings, morale stays warm.

We added a light-hearted caption to the photo: “It’s a snow day, so please chill out.”
A simple reminder that when everyone takes it slow, drives carefully, and keeps things orderly, it frees us up to handle real calls — and maybe enjoy a few moments of winter fun ourselves.

With North Carolina’s filing period for the 2026 election cycle opening today, Sheriff J. Kevin Jones has officially filed for re-election as Sheriff of Camden County.

Sheriff Jones has led this agency with a steady hand—prioritizing professional training, strengthening community trust, and ensuring that our deputies remain prepared to meet the challenges of modern law enforcement while honoring the standards that have long defined this profession.

His focus has always been simple: safeguard the county, support his staff, and serve the public with integrity.

Sheriff Jones shared the following statement:
“It has been the honor of my career to serve the people of Camden County. We have made real progress by staying grounded in our values and working together as a community.
