Summer heat can be tough on livestock. As temperatures rise, take a few simple steps to help keep your animals safe, healthy, and comfortable.
• Provide Shade
Make sure animals have access to shade throughout the day, whether from trees, shelters, or breathable shade structures. Remember, the sun moves, so check that shaded areas remain available.
• Ensure Access to Cool, Clean Water
Livestock need plenty of fresh water during hot weather. Check water sources frequently and refill as needed. If you'll be away, consider asking a neighbor or friend to monitor water availability.
• Adjust Your Schedule
Avoid moving, handling, or working animals during the hottest part of the day. Early morning and late evening are generally the safest and most comfortable times for these activities.
• Watch for Signs of Heat Stress
Early signs may include heavy panting, excessive drooling, restlessness, or lethargy. More serious symptoms can include rapid breathing, high body temperature, and dry skin.
If you suspect an animal is suffering from heat stress or heatstroke, contact your veterinarian immediately.
