Jace Griffin, Troop 78, Ridgeway,SC will be our EIGHTH Eagle Scout Candidate to enrich our Battlefield Preserve with an Eagle Project. We are humbled and grateful for the opportunity to work with these fine young men. And frankly, amazed how Camp Liberty has created such a stir with scouting.

Camp Liberty is a primitive 7 acre campground prioritized for scouting use and now has 5 completed subdivided troop sized campsites. And, this fall, it will have its sixth.

Today Jace visited Camp Liberty to see where his Eagle Project campsite will be and gathered granite for his planned fire ring. His two older brothers, (already Eagle Scouts), helped to complete this task before school starts. Thanks again to Mr. Tony Ramos of Georgia Stone Quarry who has given our scouts permission to secure granite blocks!

The young men also “volunteered,” (aka “were shanghai’d”), to help clear the Nature Trail at Historic Camden earlier this morning to get it ready for CHS cross-country use. Jace’s mom, Rhonda, also pitched in

This fall, Jace will lead scouts from his troop to complete a campsite. HUZZAH to our Scouts and Georgia Stone Quarry!
And HUZZAH!!!! FOR MOMS!!!

Rocking our Fire-Rings, which we Proudly take for Granite!

If you’re a regular reader, by now you certainly know two hundred and thirty-nine years ago, yesterday, 4400 plus Patriots marched from Rugeley’s Mill (north of the Battlefield) and literally ran into 2200 plus British soldiers at the southern Preserve border on Flat Rock Road, (then the “Great Wagon Road” or “Waxhaw’s Road” or “Charlotte Road”), at about 2am. At dawn on the morning of August 16, 1780, the main daytime Battle of Camden occurred.

What you might not know is the patriot army marched right by what is now the Georgia Stone Quarry, slightly over 8 miles north of the Battlefield Preserve. If only these stones could talk! Georgia Stone’s owner, Mr. Tony Ramos, has generously donated all the granite used to line the fire-rings at Camp Liberty. Thank you Mr. Ramos, HUZZAH!

Fictional Outlander novel aside, listen closely and you might just hear our South Carolina Revolutionary War Heritage sing from our own Rings of Stones.

It is quiet here this morning. While the sounds of battle fade quickly, 239 years later we remember and give thanks to the Patriots of the American Revolution who fought and died here; and honor the British, fighting for King and Country, who also were here.

As Americans, we continue our pledge to provide “Liberty and Justice for All.”

22 second time-lapsed video of a huge brush pile being rubbed out by THE MULCHER! The 21 acres of our young longleaf acreage should be completed today so our Battlefield will once again be peaceful on tomorrow’s 239th anniversary of the Aug. 16, 1780 Battle of Camden.

Realtime 15 sec. video clip of the MULCHER! The majority of the pile has already been shredded so you can see the action of the spinning drum. Check out the time-lapse video to see a huge pile mulched!

Magic Mulcher Invasion!

Jesse Sheehan’s Palmetto Property and Wildlife Services arrived at the Battlefield Preserve yesterday to continue our transformation.

We cleared undergrowth last November in our 21 acre tract of 15 year old longleaf. Brush was placed in massive piles throughout the acreage, easily seen to the west of Flat Rock Road. Too much to haul off, to big to burn. What to do?

Let nature take its course! Waiting for 9 months eeliminated all the softer organic materials, (like leaves), and only woody residual remained. Until today, that is!

Using a mulcher, the piles have been reduced by shredding and the vast majority of woody materials will now quickly decompose over the next year and enrich our soil.

This creates 21 acres of a young longleaf forest easily accessible by all visitors for a wonderful walk in the woods. For re-enactors, it creates an open forest of longleaf,(albeit young longleaf), that is on the actual battle-lines of the 1780 Battle of Camden that happened 239 years ago this coming Friday. A great anniversary gift in remembrance of our local extraordinary history. Come visit, see the ongoing transformation, and enjoy!

These photos are still images but we’ll post some video of THE MULCHER in action on Thursday at noon. One day prior to the 239th Anniversary of the Battle of Camden.
