Earlier this afternoon, shortly after 12:30 p.m., the Madison Township Fire Department was dispatched to the 9500 block of North Glen Drive for a commercial vehicle fire involving a trash truck.

Crews were wrapping up from a previous call when the call was dispatched. Mooresville Fire Department Car 102 was already in the area and arrived on scene within seconds. Engine 32 arrived shortly after and extinguished the fire.

According to the driver, a trash bag fell onto the engine area of the truck and caught fire. The driver quickly grabbed the truck’s fire extinguisher and contained the fire until crews arrived, preventing further damage.

This is also a good opportunity for a quick public safety reminder:

If fire trucks or emergency vehicles are blocking the road, DO NOT attempt to drive around them!

Emergency vehicles are positioned where they are for a reason. Firefighters may be working in the roadway, hose lines may be stretched across the road, equipment may be in use, and personnel may be moving around vehicles where drivers cannot see them!

Please do not squeeze around, drive through, or try to find a gap between emergency vehicles. If the road is blocked, consider it closed and find another route…..END OF STORY!

A few extra minutes on your drive is a much better option than putting yourself or a first responder in danger!

Earlier today, Sept. 7, the Madison Township Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of North Bishop Lane and State Road 144, just west of Smokey Row Road, for a serious motorcycle crash.

Ladder 31 was first to arrive and found one patient along the side of the roadway with serious injuries. A tourniquet was immediately applied to the patient’s leg to control severe bleeding.

Due to the patient’s critical condition, IU Health LifeLine was requested to respond to the scene.

Medic 32 transported the patient from the crash scene to a landing zone established at Mount Gilead Church, near North Kitchen Road and State Road 144. The Mooresville Fire Department assisted with establishing and securing the landing zone for the incoming helicopter.

The patient was transferred to LifeLine and flown to a Level I trauma center in Indianapolis. At the time of this post, the patient was last reported to be in critical but stable condition.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office - Indiana is investigating the circumstances and cause of the crash.

UPDATE: State Road 144 is back open.

Crews are currently on scene of a serious crash at the intersection of State Road 144 and North Bishop Lane, just west of Smokey Row Road.

All lanes of traffic are currently stopped in the area.

This remains an active scene. Please avoid the area, seek an alternate route, and allow emergency crews the space they need to work safely.

We will provide additional information as it becomes available.

Earlier today, Sept. 4, the Madison Township Fire Department was dispatched by Morgan County Public Safety Dispatch for a report of an individual who fell from a ladder while building a home.

Medic 32 and Ladder 31 arrived to find an individual in critical condition after falling onto exposed rebar, which penetrated the patient’s leg and remained embedded.

Crews immediately began treating severe, uncontrolled bleeding, applying two tourniquets within minutes of arrival. Crews also administered prehospital antibiotics due to the nature of the injury.

Because the rebar remained embedded in the patient’s leg, crews had to carefully cut and shorten it before the patient could be safely moved and transported. Due to the severity and complexity of the injury, IU Health LifeLine was requested to the scene while firefighters and medics worked to stabilize and extricate the patient.

Once the rebar was cut and the patient was stabilized for transport, the patient was transferred to the Lifeline crew and flown to a Level I trauma center in Indianapolis.

The patient was listed in critical but stable condition at the time of this post.

It’s going to be hotter than that Starbucks you picked up this morning. This is NOT the weather to be forgetting the essentials!!

Also, DRINK WATER! Your body isn’t the Sahara Desert and needs more than the melted ice from your morning coffee.

Wear deodorant. Drink water. Limit your time outside.

Stay cool. Stay hydrated. Smell approachable.

Sometimes the tones drop at the worst possible time… like during dinner, in the middle of a shower, or like here…shift change!

Did you know Madison Township Fire Department operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year?

To make that happen, our firefighters are divided into three separate shifts: A Shift, B Shift, and C Shift.

While one crew is wrapping up its 24-hour shift, the next crew is arriving and getting ready to take over, but emergencies don’t exactly check the schedule first.

So sometimes, a call comes in right in the middle of shift change. When that happens, you might see members from both shifts jumping on the trucks and responding together.

It’s one of the many behind-the-scenes efforts that keep the fire department staffed and ready around the clock.
