City of Cambridge Community Development Department (Official) The Community Development Department page is intended to provide information about programs, events, projects, and general updates.

If you have a specific request, please contact us at 617/349-4600. The Community Development Department is the chief planning agency for Cambridge. Through a variety of programs and activities, we strive to enhance the physical environment; improve the quality of life for residents, businesses, students, and visitors; and support the diversity of our very special community. The Department is organized into four major divisions: Community Planning, Economic Development, Environmental and Transportation Planning, and Housing. The Department also administers the city’s federal Community Development Block Grant, which funds programs of benefit to people with low and moderate incomes, primarily in the areas of housing, economic development and human services.

October 2025 marked the fifth anniversary of the adoption of the Affordable Housing Overlay (AHO). This landmark zoning provision supports the production of affordable housing. The City of Cambridge recently released the AHO Five-Year Progress Review to understand and communicate what we have accomplished.
